FAT16 – Disadvantages
• maximum 512 entries in root directory
• maximum partition size only 2 GB for Windows 98, 4 GB for NT/2000
• no backup of boot sector

FAT32 – Advantages
• unlimited number of entries in root directory
• automatically uses the secondary FAT if necessary
(FAT 16 requires a tool such as chkdsk)
• the boot sector is saved at a specific location on the data carrier
(reduction of single point of failure).
