Notes on the correct humidity
The recommended humidity is in the range of 45-55%.
Especially during heating periods, humidity can fall below the recommended range.
The reason for this is the relative humidity. At cold temperatures, the air can store less
water and thus reaches the saturation point more quickly.
If cold air is now heated by heating, the saturation point of the air shifts upwards and the
air can/"wants" to absorb more water. For this purpose, the air draws the missing
moisture from the walls, furniture, mucous membranes, skin, or similar.
This effect can be counteracted with the help of a properly used humidifier and thus a
pleasant indoor climate can be created.
The relative humidity depends on the room temperature and can be determined and
monitored, for example, by means of a hygrometer.
Effects of too low humidity
Too little humidity can lead to numerous negative effects on people and their
environment.
Examples include:
Irritation of the respiratory tract, due to dry mucous membranes.
Burning eyes
Dry skin and associated skin irritation
Headaches, difficulty concentrating
Dry damage to furniture, especially antiques
Withering houseplants
In addition, a lack of moisture in the air increases the risk of viral diseases, as viruses
can survive longer and spread faster in dry air.
Another characteristic of excessively dry air is the increased number of suspended
microparticles in the air.
The clustering of these particles (such as house dust, pollen, etc.), which is favored by
higher humidity, and the associated sinking and deposition or attachment of these, does
not occur when the room humidity is too low and leads to irritation of the respiratory
organs and eyes.
Caution: Excessive humidity also brings a variety of negative effects, such as increased
proliferation of germs, mold growth or condensation on walls and windows.
