COMPENSATION
AND DEVIATION
Compensation is recommended, if the deviation is more than 5
degrees, whenthe compassis in its normal mountingposition.
If the error is less than 5 degrees, it is sufficient to produce a
deviation
table.
n
Compensatio
is madewiththe two compensation a djusterscrews
"E/W' and "N/S" in order to reducethe errorscaused by iron

sources of
compensation adjuster screws are situated at the compass lower

Vvhen compensating, the boat should be in an area that is not
affected by permanent- or electro-magnetic disturbance.
I. Aim the boat due North and turn the "N/S" screw until the
compass reading is 00.
2. Aim the boat due East and turn the "E/W' screw until the
compass reading is 900.
3. Am the boat due South. If the compassdoes not show 1800, t urn
the "N/S" screw until the error is halved. (E.g. if the error is 60-
turn the screw until the error is 30.)
4. Aim the boat due West.tf the compass does not show2700,turn
the screw until the error is halved.
5. Gothroughtheprocedure againandcheckthe adjusted values.
6. Checkthe compassevery20 degreesand producea deviation
table and deviation
curve.
As the magnetic conditions in a boat are liable to change, we
recommend checking of the compassonce a year and alwaysafter
installationof equipmentwhichmight affectthe compass.
