5150 LIVE-LOADING INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Caution:
It is expected that the installer(s) are well acquainted with their equipment and
will observe all necessary de-pressurization and cooling requirements such as they apply to
the operation on which this installation will occur. Read all instructions before proceeding.
ou have been supplied with a prestacked valve live-loading assembly. The assembly consists

of two flat washers, if applicable, an inner spring guide, if applicable, and a stacked set of disc
springs which have been designed by A.W. Chesterton Engineering.
1. Follow the standard valve repacking procedures as outlined by your trained Chesterton Specialist.
2. With gland nuts removed place gland bolts (studs) in an upright position.
3. If supplied install flat washer(s) over gland bolt (stud). As shown in Figure 1.
4. If supplied place inner spring guide(s) over each gland bolt (stud) allowing it to rest on flat
washer. As shown in Figure 2.
5. Install the disc springs over the inner spring guide in the proper configuration as shown in
Figure 3 or 4 below. The free stack height of the disc springs will exceed the inner guide height.
6. If supplied place the remaining flat washer(s) on top of the stacked disc springs.
7. Alternating between gland bolts adjust nuts until finger tight.
8. Using a torque wrench repeat step 7 until the specified torque value is obtained.†
NOTES:
1. All bolts, nuts, flat washers, inner springs guides,
and disc springs must be coated on all surfaces with
Chesterton Nickel Anti-Seize.
2. Gland must be placed concentric with the stuffing
box bore to prevent scoring the stem or uneven
loading to the packing.
3. If only one flat washer is supplied it must be installed

at the bottom of the set as outlined in Step 3.
4. The inner spring guide(s) and/or disc springs must
be centered on the gland bolts (studs) for even
load distribution.
5. In some installations there will be excess clearance
between the O.D. of gland bolt and the I.D. of the
sleeve or I.D. of the disc springs.
