connect (electrically conductive) toothed belt pulleys to the chas-
sis.
• It is often necessary to connect the tail boom to the motor casing
on electric helicopters.
• The use of carbon fibre-reinforced/glass fibre-reinforced blades
as well as a carbon fibre-reinforced tail boom can generate consi-
derable static charge particularly at high speeds and low air humi-
dity. To avoid this happening, a conductive connection should be
made from the tail rotor gerbox up to the main rotor shaft.
The use of antistatic sprays (e.g. Kontakt Chemie) has also pro-
ven beneficial.
Turbines:
To avoid static charge, connect an earthing strap to the turbine
shield.
• High static charge (approx. 40,000 Volt) often builds up in fast
jet models made from glass fibre-reinforced materials due to the
high speed (especially in low humidity conditiions). Glass fibre-
reinforced parts, larger than about 10 cm², should therefore be
connected conductively to each other.
• Connections led outwards through the fuselage (tank connec-
tion, etc.) should also be connected conductively to each other to
avoid static charge. Static charge over the tank hose can cause
shut-off valves to operate.
• Tyres on the undercarriage can also generate static charge and
should therefore be fitted with copper brushes.
Range test:
• Before starting up a new model or a new receiver or using a new
receiver, it is recommended to carry out a range test. The model
should not be placed on the ground but rather raised by about 1
- 1.5 m above the ground. Use a plastic or wooden table, crate or
cardboard box, etc. for this purpose. On no account use anything
containing metal (camping table, etc.) Likewise, there should be
no conductive materials in the vicinity (fences, cars, etc.) and
your assistant should not be standing too close to the model.
• First start up the model without the drive motor. Slowly move
away from the model while slowly but continuously controlling a
rudder function.
• While moving away from the model, observe the rudder to check
whether it fails or stops. If necesary, use the help of an assi-
stant to observe rudder operation from a certain distance. While
moving away also turn the transmitter a little to the left and right to
simulate different aerial positions in relation to the model.
• A range of at least 50 m should be reached in Power Down mode
(range test mode). In most cases a range of approx. 80 - 120 m is
reached, representing a very good result. If a range of only 40 m
or less is reached, on no account should
the model be started. First establish the cause of the low range.
• If the initial range test is successful, repeat the same test with the
motor running (caution: secure model if necessary). The range
achieved now should only be slightly less (approx. 20%). If it is
much lower, this indicates that the drive unit is interfering with the
receiver.
Remedy the problem by ensuring that all the steps described
above have been carried out.
NOTES ON OPERATION
All robbe-Futaba receivers still operate at a supply voltage of 3 V
while maintaining the same range. This means that even in the event
of a battery cell failing (short-circuit) the receiver system will nor-
mally continue operating as robbe-Futaba servos still operate at
3.6 V but only a little slower and with less power. This is an impor-
tant feature in preventing temporary voltage dips at low outside
temperatures in winter.
The disadvantage of this feature is that, under certain circum-
stances, failure of the battery cell may not be noticed. You should
therefore check the receiver battery from time to time.
It is recommended to use the robbe-Accumonitors No. 8409 which
indicates the current voltage of the receiver battery by means of an
LED strip.
SWITCH-ON SEQUENCE
Always switch on the transmitter first and then the receiver. Switch off
in the reverse order. The servos run in neutral after the receiver has
been switched on. It is recommended to check all functions by ope-
rating the transmitter controls. Also check correct direction of rotation
of the control functions. The direction of rotation must be reversed if a
servo is rotating in the wrong direction.
CAPACITY/OPERATING TIME OF RECEIVER BATTERY
Applicable for all power sources: The capacity drops drastically
at low temperatures so that the operating times are considerably
shorter.
The operating time greatly depends on the number of connected ser-
vos, the ease of movement of linkages and the frequency of control
movements. The power consumption of a standard servo is between
150 mA and 600 mA with the motor running and approx. 8 mA when
the motor is not running. Superservos or powerful digital servos
require up to 1300 mA peak current at full actuating power.
Select a receiver battery with sufficient capacity corresponding
to the current consumption and number of servos.
Make sure that the linkages move smoothly and servo operation is
not restricted. A servo continuously running against a mechanical limit
consumes current at the highest rate and will suffer damage in the
long term.
A discharged battery in the receiver system is identified by distinctly
slower servo movements. In this case, immediately stop operation
and charge the battery.
To check the receiver battery voltage during operation we recommend
you use a battery controller that can provide you with an indication of
the charge status of the battery.
Telecommunication Requirements
R&TTE is the European Directive for Radio Equipment and Telecom-
munications Terminal Equipment and the mutual recongition of its
conformity. Inter alia, the R&TTE Directive defines the circulation and
commissioning of radio equipment in the European Community.
A major change in the Directive is the abolition of the approval. Prior
to placing radio systems into circulation, the manufacturer or impor-
ter must carry out a conformity evaluation process for the equipment
and then notify (register with) the corresponding authorities.
