INFORMATION ON SERVICING
Check to the area
Prior to be innin work on systems containin flammable refri erants, safety checks are necessary to
ensure that the risk of i nition is minimised. For repair to the refri eratin system, the followin precau-
tions shall be complied with prior to conductin work on the system.
Work procedure
Work shall be undertaken under a controlled procedure as to minimise the risk of a flammable as or
vapour bein present while the work is bein performed.
General work area
All maintenance sta and others workin in the local area shall be instructed on the nature of work bein
carried out. Work in confined spaces shall be avoided. The area around the workspace shall be sectioned
o . Ensure that the conditions within the area have been made safe by control of flammable material.
Checkin for presence of refri erant
The area shall be checked with an appropriate refri erant detector prior to and durin work, to ensure
the technician is aware of potentially flammable atmospheres. Ensure that the leak detection equipment
bein used is suitable for use with flammable refri erants, i.e. non-sparkin , adequately sealed or intrin-
sically safe.
Presence of fire extin uisher
If any hot work is to be conducted on the refri eration equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire
extin uishin equipment shall be available to hand. Have a dry powder or C02 fire extin uisher adjacent
to the char in area.
No i nition sources
No person carryin out work in relation to a refri eration system which involves exposin any pipe work
that contains or has contained flammable refri erant shall use any sources of i nition in such a manner
that it may lead to the risk of fire or explosion. All possible i nition sources, includin ci arette smokin ,
should be kept su ciently far away from the site of installation, repairin , removin and disposal, durin
which flammable refri erant can possibly be released to the surroundin space. Prior to work takin
place, the area around the equipment is to be surveyed to make sure that there are no flammable haz-
ards or i nition risks. "No Smokin "si ns shall be displayed.
Ventilated area
Ensure that the area is in the open or that it is adequately ventilated before breakin into the system or
conductin any hot work. A de ree of ventilation shall continue durin the period that the work is carried
out. The ventilation should safely disperse any released refri erant and preferably expel it externally into
the atmosphere.
