A. MEASURING THE CONDITION OF THE UVA OUTPUT OF THE LAMPS
FITTED IN AN ELECTRONIC FLY TRAP
The UV lamps in electronic fly traps should be changed at least once per year,
to maintain maximum efficiency. Lamps are most attractive to the target flying
insects when less than one year old.
This is because the UV light emitted by the tubes at a wavelength of 350-375
nanometres diminishes with use. Light of this wavelength is invisible to the
human eye. Daily switching on and off of the lamps results in an even faster loss
of the effective UV emission. Therefore leave the tubes switched on continuously
and change them at least once per year (preferably at the onset of increased fly
activity after the winter).
The UVA light output power from an insect attracting fluorescent lamp also
decreases proportionally with the distance from the lamp(s). Therefore it is
important to take the measurement at the correct distance from the trap to
determine the UVA light output power condition of the lamps.
The meter should be pointed directly at the trap from a specific distance from
the lamps/trap as specified in Table 1.

Note – The total combined lamp wattage as shown in table 1 above is the
sum of the wattage of each individual lamp within a given trap. For example,
a Chameleon 1x2 is fitted with two 15W lamps, so the total combined lamp
wattage is 30W. Looking at Table 1 you would need to hold the PestWest UV-A
meter at a distance of 1 metre away from the trap to take a proper measurement
of a Chameleon 1x2.
