Operating Instructions
for Explosion Protected STÖBER Planetary Gear Units Series P , PA, PKX, PK,
PH, PHV, PHA, PHVA, PHKX, PHK, PHAK, PHQ, PHQA, PHFS, PHQK, PHQAK to
EC Directive 94/9/EC
en
These operating instructions are a supplement to the oper-
ating instructions for normal operation, ID 441957 and
441972.
1. Installation of the gear unit
The gear unit must be installed / mounted only in the specified
model and on a flat, vibration-absorbing, rigid structure. It must
be ensured that no tension exists between the feet of the hous-
ing and the supporting surface. The permissible lateral and axial
forces must be observed.
Bolts in quality 8.8 must be generally employed to fasten the gear
unit. However, bolts in quality 10.9 must be employed for fas-
tening by the customer to transmit the torques specified in the
catalogue for the flange fastenings (housing type G or F).
STOP! If the gear unit is equipped with breather valves,
these must be freely accessible.
2. Lubrication
STOP! The gear units must be put into operation only in their
intended positions. The label for fitting indicates which side
of the gear unit must face downwards. The quantity of oil
filled in the factory and the setup is adjusted to this. There-
fore, any modification of the gear units is permitted only af-
ter consulting STÖBER.
If the gear unit is opened, e.g. for repairs, it is necessary for
safe operation that the gear unit is filled with the correct lu-
bricant in the specified quantity as indicated on the type plate.
The type / installation position may only be changed after
consultation with STÖBER Antriebstechnik. The ATEX ap-
proval will be voided without prior consultation.
3. Surface temperature
The surface temperature of the gear unit is max. 120 °C depen -
ding on the speed, transmission ratio and type. Gear units with
higher surface temperatures are permissible only after consulta-
tion with STÖBER Antriebs technik and must be marked accord-
ingly on the type plate. The machine user must ensure that pos-
sible dust deposits do not exceed a maximum thickness of 5 mm,
as specified in EN 50281-1/50281-2.
STOP! The permissible ambient tem perature is -25° C ≤ T
The specifications of the max. surface temperatures on the
type plate are based on measurements under normal ambi-
ent and operating conditions. Slight changes in these conditions
(e.g. constricted installation) can have a substantial influence on
the developed temperatur e.
It is essential during the commissioning of the gear unit
to measure the surface temperature at the maximum
load (see Item 4.2).
The measurement can be conducted with an ordinary ther-
mometer. The surface temperature must be determined at the
transition from the gear unit to the motor where the terminal box
prevents ventilation by the motor fan.
For gear units with motor adapters or free input shafts, the
surface temperature must be measured at the joint between the
inlet side gear unit flange and the attachments.
The maximum surface temperature is achieved after approx.
3 hours at full load and must not exceed a value of 70K above the
ambient temperature.
If the temperature difference is higher, the drive must be stopped
immediately. If this occurs, it is essential to consult STÖBER
Antriebstechnik.
4.
Commissioning
4.1
Before commissioning
• Examine the delivery immediately upon receipt to determine
transport damage. Inform the transport company of this imme-
diately. If necessary, cancel commissioning. Remove transport
braces before commissioning.
• Do the following values on the type plate of the gear unit com-
Issue: 04.08.2010
ply with the Ex application on site: Equipment group, Ex catego-
ry, Ex zone, temperature class, maximum surface temperature
• Are you certain that no explosive atmosphere, oils, acids, gas-
es, vapour or radiation exists during the installation of the gear
unit?
• Are you certain that the gear unit is sufficiently ventilated and
not subject to external heating (e.g. through couplings)? The cool-
ing air must not exceed a temperature of 40 °C.
• Are all inspection and drain screws and breather screws and
valves freely accessible?
• Are all drive elements to be installed ATEX approved?
• Are you certain that the data indicated on the type plates of
stand-alone gear units with adapters or drive covers will not be
exceeded?
• For installation of gear units with hollow shaft and compression
disc: Is the hood correctly installed?
• For gear units with motor adapters: Are you certain that the in-
stalled motor cannot overload the gear unit by exceeding the per-
missible torque? See type plate for permissible torque.
• For mains-supplied geared motors (observe Ex protection on
separate motor type plate): Verify that the data indicated on the
type plates of the gear unit and the motor comply with the op-
erating conditions on site.
• For AC converter operated geared motors (observe Ex protec-
tion on separate motor type plate): Verify that the geared motor
is approved for AC converter operation. The parameters of the
converter must prevent overloading of the gear unit (see gear unit
type plate).
4.2
During commissioning
• Measure the surface temperature after 3 hours. A value of 70K
above the ambient temperature must not be exceeded. If a val-
ue > 70K is determined, stop the drive immediately and consult
STÖBER.
5.
Inspection and maintenance
After 1000 service hours:
• Visual inspection of the seals to find leaks.
After 5000 service hours:
≤ 40 °C.
• Change synthetic oil and roller bearing grease.
a
• Replace shaft sealing ring.
After 10000 service hours:
• Change synthetic oil and roller bearing grease.
• Replace shaft sealing ring.
• Replace roller bearing.
6.
Explosion protected gear units
If employed correctly and in compliance with the specifications
in the above items of these operating instructions and observing
the other associated information sheets on installation and com-
missioning, the gear unit series listed above can be employed in
rooms with explosion hazards under the conditions listed below.
Depending on the order confirmation and the type plate for
gear units:
II3GD – Designation according to Group II, Category 3, gas and
dust.
c/k T3 – Design safety and liquid encapsulation within tempera-
ture class T3.
c/k T4 – design safety and liquid encapsulation within tempera-
ture class T4.
c/k 120°C – design safety and liquid encapsulation, max. surface
temperature 120 °C.
CAUTION! Max. speeds: Depending on the chosen category
different input speeds are possible. Also see Information
Brochure ID 441677 or the order confirmation for gear units
with temperature limit monitor (GTW).
For geared motors, observe Ex protection on separate motor
type plate.
