The Squids® Cold Shrink Tool Trap™ is designed for ease-of-use, and to help reduce the
risk of dropped tools when used with an appropriate tethering system (refer to Using
A Tethering System instructions). The Squids® Tool Attachment Series is designed and
tested to create retrofit attachment points on tools, allowing users to safely tether them
if a secure tool connection point is not available.
DEFINITIONS: "Tool Tails™" – A system component that is captured by the "Trap" and
includes a tethering attachment point.
"Tool Traps™" – A system component that's applied independently or over
a "Tail", fixing it securely to the tool and securing it in the event of a drop.
WARNINGS: All warnings and instructions must be read and understood before using this
product. Failure to do so may result in property damage, serious injury, or death.
• DO NOT use Cold Shrink Traps with Squids® Web Tool Tails™.
• ONLY use Cold Shrink Traps with Squids® Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tails™ or with
Squids® Tool Lanyards.
• Do not use tool attachments in temperatures below -40°F / -40°C or above 150°F /
65°C.
• Refer to individual component labels for specific weight ratings (see selection grid).
Maximum capacity is equal to the lowest capacity component within the tethering
system.
• Always inspect Tool Attachments prior to, and after, each use (refer to INSPECTION
instructions).
• Only use Cold Shrink Traps with specifically designated Tool Tails™ or as otherwise
instructed for use.
• Squids® Cold Shrink Traps should NOT be used with other manufacturers' tails or
other attachments.

• Never modify or alter your Cold Shrink Trap.
• Never modify a tool that could result in manufacturer guideline deviation.
• Do not use this product if it interferes with the tool's safe working condition.
• Use extra precaution around moving machinery or parts, electrical hazards, chemical
hazards or other apparent hazards.
• Never attach a tool with a Squids® Tool Attachment to a lanyard that is longer than
the Maximum Lanyard Length indicated on the product label of the tool attachment
(refer to the "Using a Tethering System" portion of the instructions).
PREPARING FOR APPLICATION
• Ensure tools are clean, dry and free of grease, oil or other substances during
application.
• Read instructions completely before and during assembly.
REQUIRED ITEMS FOR APPLICATION
• Appropriate Tool Tails™ (see selection grid)
• Appropriate Tool Trap™ model (see selection grid)
1. For attachment to tools with a captive hole or handle engineered hole into the
tool [fig 1], locate the tool's connection point. Weigh your tool to determine the
appropriate tool lanyard to use and directly attach that tool lanyard to the captive
hole.
2. For attachment to tools without a captive hole, measure the diameter and weight of
your tool, then use the Selection Grid to determine the proper Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool
Tail™ and proper sized Cold Shrink Tool Trap™ to apply. (Note that, in some situations,
there are multiple options, so the user may choose their preference.)
a. If the tool is not cylindrically shaped, measure the tool at the widest axis when
determining the diameter.
b. If the tool is tapered, locate and measure the area with the largest diameter you
can create the attachment on.
3. Choke Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ onto the tool by sliding it around the tool's shaft
and snug the barrel lock down tightly if applicable [fig 2]. Note the 3700 Web Tool
Tails™ do not work with Squids® Cold Shrink
Tool Trap™.
•
Ensure the Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ is positioned as far up the shaft of the
tool as possible without affecting its use. A minimum 1in / 25mm away from the
end of the tool is suggested.
•
If the tool is tapered, position the tail on or near the portion with the largest
diameter.
4. Position the Cold Shrink Tool Trap™ over the tool and tail leaving the choked portion
of the tail exposed above the Shrink. Ensure the entire face of the rubber shrink is
over tool [fig 3].
•
The Cold Shrink Tool Trap's inner core has a loose end that should route up
through the opposite end of the Shrink Trap piece. The
loose end should point away from choked portion of tool tail [fig 4]. If it is not in
this position, reroute it up through the interior of the shrink's core.
5. While holding Shrink Trap in place, pull the inner core's loose end so that it begins to
pull through the center of the trap.
•
The rubber will begin to contract down over the tail and the tool [fig 5].
•
Continue to pull the inner core through the center of trap until it is completely
removed [fig 6].
6. Attach a tool lanyard to complete an appropriate tethering system [fig 7].
