Theory of colour
In 1666 Newton formulated the theory of colour.
He observed that if light passes through a prism, it
is broken up into a series colours due to the various
refraction of the rays that compose it. This series is
known as the spectrum, which in Latin means "im-
age", "vision" or "phantom". Colours are perceived as
different if they are observed separately. When these
different rays are mixed, the eye perceives a colour
that is different from what it would see if they were
separated.
Light is composed of 7 fundamental colours: red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
The classic example which can be found in nature
concerns the light spectrum and the rainbow.
What is light
Light (in Latin lux or lucis) is the physical agent that
makes objects visible. The three basic units of light
(and of all electromagnetic radiation) are brightness
(or amplitude), colour (or frequency), and polariza-
tion.
The various wavelengths are interpreted by the brain
as colours, which go from red in the longest wave-
lengths (lowest frequency) to violet in the shortest
wavelengths (greater frequency). The frequencies
included between these two extremes are perceived
as orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo.
Visible light occupies a part of the electromagnetic
spectrum, with a wavelength between 400 and 700
nm. (known as the 'visible spectrum').

What is colour therapy
Colour therapy is an alternative medicine that makes
use of colours as a cure for illnesses.
The use of colours is generally governed by common
principles, similar to those that lead us to choose
the colour of the clothes we wear of the colours of
the walls in the home to match them with a certain
personality, and to favour or to contrast a certain
mood. In colour therapy, colours are supposed to
aid the body and mind to rediscover their natural
balance. They are also supposed to have physical
and psychic effects that stimulate the body and calm
certain symptoms.
Often those who practice colour therapy as a tech-
nique of alternative medicine match colours with
"energy points" distributed along the body. Each of
the seven correspond to one of the seven colours
of the rainbow (plus white) and influences a certain
organ or main glands of our body.
