Universal-Skala können auch Materialien gemessen werden, die nicht mit der jeweils vorhandenen Prozentskala identisch sind, wenn der Messbereich des Gerätetypes dafür ausreichend ist. Dazu wird die gewünschte Feuchtigkeitsskala durch Trockenschrankvergleiche bestimmt, wobei die Ablesewerte der 100. Universal-Skala den ermittelten Feuchtigkeitswerten in grafischer Darstellung gegenübergestellt werden und daraus die Feuchtigkeitskurve ermittelt wird.
