Recommendations for cleaning sanitary fittings
Compiled in cooperation with leading detergent manufacturers. Modern sanitary fittings are made from a whole
variety of materials in order to meet the market's requirements in respect of design and functionality. The
requirements to be met by the detergents used are equally diverse and the ingredients in these detergents must
be compatible with the materials used.
In order to avoid damage and complaints, certain criteria must be taken into account both when using the fittings
and when they are subsequently cleaned.
Planning cleaning activities in public and industrial areas
The range of public and industrial properties includes everything from hospitals and food-processing factories to
sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. Correct cleaning of the sanitary facilities in all these properties depends
very strongly on the type of dirt and scale encountered and differs accordingly. Careful planning is essential in
order to select an agent and method appropriate to the required cleaning task and should take into account at
least the following aspects:
-
Place of use
-
Frequency and intensity of cleaning (basic or regular cleaning)
-
Type of products installed (base and surface materials)
-
Condition of the installed products
Surface finish of sanitary fittings
The majority of sanitary fittings have a chrome-nickel surface finish meeting the requirements of DIN EN 248,
although the following surface materials are also used:
-
Stainless steel
-
Plastics, including powder-coatings and wet-coatings
-
Anodized aluminium
-
PVD-coatings (layers of mechanically resistant material with metallic effect)
-
Special galvanic finishes, such as gold, aranja etc.
Coloured, non-metal surface finishes other than PVD coatings are always more susceptible to damage, particularly
scratching, than is the case with metallic finishes. Before starting to clean the product, it is therefore advisable to
determine the type of sanitary fitting.
Detergents for sanitary fittings
Acids are an indispensable ingredient in detergents in order to remove the scale deposits. The following points
must be noted without fail when cleaning sanitary fittings:
-
Only detergents explicitly approved for this pupose may actually be used.
-
Detergents containing hydrochloric acid, formic acid or acetic acid must not be used, as these can cause
considerable damage.
-
Detergents containing phosphoric acid similarly can only be used within certain limits.
-
Detergents containing chlorine bleach must not be used.
-
Abrasive detergents and equipment, such as unsuitable powders, pads and microfibre cloths, must not be used.
