The sleek McDonnell-Douglas F-101 Voo-
doo was one of the finest fighter-intercep-
tor aircraft ever built. Conceived initially as
a long range escort fighter, its mission was
re-defined to counter the threat of a strate-
gic nuclear attack on the North American
continent. The versatile F-101 B proved to
be an excellent all-weather interceptor,
and it served both the United States and
Canada in this role.
Though never called upon to repulse en-
emy bombers, the two-place Voodoo com-
piled an impressive service record that
spanned more than 25 years. Powered by
two afterburner-equipped J-57 turbojet en-
gines, it could achieve speeds in excess of
1200 miles per hour. The crew consisted of
a pilot and a defensive systems operator.
Armament was composed of two Genie
and two Falcon air-to-air missiles mounted
under the fuselage, and two external fuel
tanks were fitted to improve range.
In the late sixties, Martin Marietta Cor-
poration contracted to modify a number of
ex-Canadian Armed Forces CF-101 B Voo-
doos as high/low altitude, daylight recon-
naissance aircraft under the designation
RF-101B. The RF-101B had all armament
and fire control systems associated with
the interceptor removed. This version car-
ried cameras and control equipment in a
modified nose. Additional communications
and navigational gear were stowed in the
weapons bay.
Equipment carried in the nose included
a KS-87B forward camera, two KS-87B left
and right split vertical cameras, an AXQ-2
forward-looking television camera, and an
AXQ-2 downward-looking television cam-
era. The pilot's cockpit contained a TV
viewfinder control indicator. Most controls
in the rear cockpit were removed during
the modification.
Eventually, 23 Voodoos were converted
to RF-101B standards. One of these was
allocated to the Air Force Logistics Com-
mand, and the other 22 went to the Air Na-
tional Guard. All of the Air Guard RF-101Bs
were delivered to the 192nd Tactical Re-
connaissance Squadron at Reno, Nevada.
Six years after the first aircraft arrived, the
squadron converted to the RF-4C Phan-
tom, and all RF-101BS were retired from
service.
Your Monogram kit of the RF-101B is
provided with the markings of the 192nd
TRS, and it can be finished in the four-color
Tactical Air Force camouflage scheme. .
