BRONCO
H-145-380
The nimble Bronco is the Marine Corps' answer to a requirement
for a fast, maneuverable ground support fighter-bomber. Yet it is able
to loaf around in the target area until it is called in to attack.
55 TO 280+ MPH!
The Bronco is designed specifically for limited warfare in rugged
jungle terrain. Its concept is a direct result of the experience gained in
Vietnam. A large "bug-eyed" cockpit canopy permits its crew to look
almost directly beneath the plane during observation and air controller
missions. The OV-IOA is so maneuverable it can literally fly circles
around ground targets; the turning radius of the Bronco is only 500
feet! For loitering, the Bronco can fly as slow as 55 mph. Its maximum
speed is over 280 mph, fast enough to make it a difficult target for
enemy gunners.
In spite of some developmental difficulties which delayed production
of the Bronco, it has proven to be the most versatile combat plane yet
conceived. In Marine Corps service, the OV-IOA is used as a light
armed reconnaissance aircraft (LARA). In this rôle it carries four 7 62
mm machine guns and a great variety of conventional bombs, fire
bombs and missiles. Future missions for the Marine Corps' Broncos
wîll include helicopter escort duties and light cargo transport.
EXPANDABLE C A R G O AREA
The rear portion of the OV-lOA's fuselage pod is in fact a large
cargo compartiment of 75 cubic foot capacity. By removing the ob-
server's seat and controls, the cargo area can be enlarged to 111 cubic
feet. The rear fuselage cone is actually a removable cargo door which
permits straight-in loading and air drop opérations.
The two-man crew of the Bronco sit in ejection seats which permit
them to eject at any altitude or speed should an emergency arise.

DIRT FÏELD TAKEOFFS
A spécial landing gear suspension system has been designed to Iet the
Bronco operate from rough, unimproved dirt fields. Its thick, shoulder
mour.'iJ wings with double-slotted flaps let the Bronco take off after
a run o: only 740 feet. The twin propellers turn in opposite directions
to eliminate torque and help stabilize the Bronco at low speeds. The
OV-lOA's turboprop engines give instant accélération should a sudden
surge of speed become necessary. The performance and response of
Bronco is. remarkable. Below 15,000 feet the Bronco may be held in a
vertical d: e as long as the pilot desires without exceeding the aircraft
speed limitations.
The firs: Bronco joined the Marines in 1968 at the same time the
U.S. Air Force took delivery of their first OV-IOA. Now in squadron
strength. the Bronco is proving its maverick design as one of the most
valuable aircraft in military service.
