Connection and getting started of Porter Flex
• Set the desired inclination of the Notebook support.
• Place the Notebook on the Notebook support in a way that the front edge of the Notebook
rests against the Notebook support.
• Switch on your Notebook and wait until the operating system has finished loading.
• The operation of the product requires at least Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP & Vista.
Mac OS X or higher.
• Connect the USB connector to a free USB 2.0 port of your Notebook.
• Naturally, a conventional USB 1.1 port of the computer can also be used instead of a
USB 2.0 port. However, in this case the transfer data rate will be very low (USB 1.1, about
1 MByte/sec max.).
Use of the USB HUB
Porter Flex provides in total four USB 2.0 ports.
To these you can e.g. connect and operate USB sticks, scanner, WLAN sticks etc.
For high power USB devices, please connect with bundled universal power
adapter, which provides an output current of at least 1 A.
Setup for power adapter:
1) Select the correct plug for your country.
2) Slide in the plug onto the power adapter.
3) Press it down until it is locked firmly.
4) Please ensure the plug is securely attached every time before use.
To remove the plug:
Please push "OPEN" button downward and release the plug from power adapter.
Caution:
1) Please do not connect the plug to socket directly unless it's securely attached on power
adapter.
2) Power adapter is not a toy. Please keep out of reach of children or pets.
Handling
• Avoid the following unfavourable ambient conditions at the installation point or during
transportation:
– damp or excessively high air humidity;
– extreme cold (<0°C) or heat (>45°C), direct sunlight;
– dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents;
– strong vibration, impact or blows;
– strong magnetic fields, e.g. close to machines or loudspeakers.
• Check the product for damage before each use! If you detect any damage, do NOT
connect the device to the mains voltage! This constitutes a mortal danger!
Safe operation must be presumed to be no longer possible, if
– the device exhibits visible damage;
– the device no longer operates and
– the device was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long
period of time or
– after extraordinary stress caused by transport.
• Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor pinched.
• Place the start box on a level, firm, and sufficiently large area.
• Place the Notebook exactly in the middle of Porter Flex, not overlapping to the left or right
so it could fall off.
• Do not move Porter Flex with the Notebook on it with a jerk, whilst in operation. The hard
disk may be damaged by movement whilst in operation, furthermore, data may be lost!
• The weight of Porter Flex/Notebook may cause damage to the surface on the mounting
site. Therefore, do not place the device on valuable furniture without appropriate protec-
tion.
Cleaning
The use of a dry, soft, lint-free cloth is sufficient to clean the product. Do not apply too much
pressure, it can scratch the product.
Dust can be easily removed using a clean, soft brush and a vacuum cleaner.
Tips & Notes
• USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged whilst the Notebook is in operation.
You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or Windows may crash
when the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transmitted.
In Windows ME/XP you can see an arrow in the menu bar by means of which you can
instruct Windows to disconnect the device, i.e. to finish data transmission in order to be
able to disconnect the connecting cable without any danger.
Alternatively you can simply finish the Notebook operation and switch it off, then you
disconnect the USB connection between Porter Flex and Notebook.
• USB 2.0 devices are downwards compatible. This means that USB 2.0 integrated in
Porter Flex can also function with conventional "slow" USB 1.1 ports, but then only at the
maximum USB 1.1 speed (effective max. ca. 1 MByte/s). Several MBytes/sec is possible
with USB 2.0.
