Safe examination of the blacking solution for iron, steel and cast iron
The KBS 9200 refractometer is used for measuring the mixing ratios of the blacking solution.
In order to guarantee the smooth running of the blacking process the blacking solution must be
mixed with water in the correct ratios.
You can monitor the mixing ratios with the KBS Refractometer.
Application:
Before using the KBS 9200 Refractometer the glass surface as well as the glass flap must be cleaned
with water in order to exclude incorrect measurement.
Using the pipette take a sample of the blacking solution and dribble one or two drops inside the
glass area, such that the surface is covered.
Close the glass flap so that the liquid is well distributed.
Hold the KBS Refractometer in the light and look through it.
On the inside is a scale from 0 to 10 Brix. You can see a visible dividing line between the blue field
and the white field which indicates the concentration of the blacking solution.

If your measurement results are below 4 Brix, your mix is to weak.
Add KBS 3000 or KBS 3080 to increase the concentration.
-
If your measurement results are over 5.5 Brix, your mix is to strong.
Add water to decrease the concentration.
In order to maintain a consistent functional capability, the device should be cleared with water after
it has been used.
