The striking livery featuring
a
yellow body
with
black strobe pattem was a
symbol of Yamaha motorcycles which
took
part in numerous races
in
the
U.S. during
the
1970s
and
1980s.
Kenny
Roberts,
who won
three
consecutive
500cc class Grand Prix Championships
from
1
978, also had
this
livery
on
his
YZR500.
This legendary livery
is
known as
the
"U.S.
lnter-coloring"
and
it
made its retum on the Yamaha YZR-M1
at
the
2005
U,S. GP.
That year marked the 50th
anniversary
of
Yamaha's founding
and they were determined
to
retain both
the
Riders' and Teams' Champi-
onships, which they had
won
in
the
previous year, as well reclaim the
Manufacturers'
Championship.
The
2005
YZR-M1
was
drastically
improved, featuring
a
4-stroke
inline 4-cylinder 990cc engine
that
offered
