The Tempest has four poles—two "Main Poles" that are the same length, go
corner to corner, cross at top center, and are installed first; and two "Arch
Poles" that fit in pole pockets and arch above each end. The front Arch Pole is
longer than the back Arch Pole. The Arch Poles have a small section at the cen-
ter that is pre-bent to form a 135-degree angle. The Tempest has two doors.
The front door is about twice the size of the back door. Install all the poles
through the front door. You can also open the back door if you want—this
makes the installation of the back arch pole easier.
INSTALLING POLES IN THE
TEMPEST
1. Spread your tent out and zip the
front door open (in the rain you
can open just the bottom of the
door). Unfold the shock-corded
poles, making sure all joints are
fully engaged. Joints not fully
engaged can bend or break. Do
not toss the poles open! The sec-
tions snapping together can
damage the poles.
Note: When setting up in windy
conditions, keep the wind at
your back and stake down the
front of the tent before inserting
poles, with the back door closed.
The wind will blow into the
doorway and inflate the tent like
a balloon, making it easy to
insert the poles. Don't let the
wind blow the tent away!
2. Install the first straight pole.
Select one of the straight poles.
Insert one end into the front
door, and carefully insert it into
the back corner on one side. Be
careful not to catch the net
pockets or any of the doors. Be
ABSOLUTELY sure it makes it into
the corner of the floor (a
second person can guide
this into position from out-
side the tent). Arch the pole
into the roof of the tent,
and carefully position the
other end into the front cor-
ner opposite the back cor-
ner, so the pole crosses the
tent (Illustration 1: a, b).
Place the pole end into the
snap. This should not be
difficult—the tent is not
tight at this point. Twist a
couple of pole ties into
place around the pole, to hold it in position while getting the other
poles in place. Note: due to the asymmetric shape of the door, it is eas-
ier to install the first pole from back left to front right (a, c).
3. Install the other straight pole just like the first. The poles should cross
at top center. Clip into place with the Twistlock pole ties.
4. Install the front Arch Pole (e, f). Holding one end of the longer Arch
Pole in one hand, grasp the other end of the Arch Pole with the other
hand; keeping your hands spread about 5 feet apart. (Place one end on
the ground, then grasp the other end and flex the pole, until you can
reach the end on the ground with your free hand). With the pole flexed
in front of you, back into the tent, flexing the pole no more than
required to get it into the door. Cover the sharp ends with your hands
to prevent them from pushing against the fabric. Move backward into
the tent and place each end into the forward-most (e, f) pole pockets
with the pole angled forward—first one side, then the other. Once
securely in the pole pockets, rotate the arch upward until the pole sits
above the door. Fasten some pole ties to hold it in place.
5. Install the back Arch Pole. Again, grasp the short Arch Pole with both

SEAM SEALING
The main seams on the Tempest are not sealed. The floor seam and seams
inside the vestibules are sealed, but the main seams shown in the diagram
must be carefully sealed for the tent to be waterproof. The seams to be sealed
are (1) the main seam across the top of the tent; (2) the end seams between
the tent body and the vestibules; and (3) the floor seams between the tent
body and the floor. To be properly sealed, all these seams must be sealed from
the inside AND the outside. Plan ahead—a
good sealing job requires sealing and drying
time. It is much better to seal the tent before
it is used, while it is very clean. To seal the
tent, set your Tempest up in a clean, shady and
well ventilated place. Carefully fill the applica-
tor syringe three quarters full with the Seam
Grip provided. You'll find it helpful to have
paper towels handy. Seal the seams from the
outside first.
Using the applicator, run a small bead of Seam Grip directly down the center of
ALL exterior seams, taking particular care around the door awnings. Be sure to
seal both sides of webbing loops that are sewn into the seams. Let the tent
dry. This usually takes 24 hours. The inside of the seams are sealed with the
tent not set up. It usually takes at least 4 passes to seal the seams and let
them dry before turning the tent over and doing the other side. Turn the tent
inside out. Seal the gap between the black tape and the ToddTex fabric, and
the line of stitching, on both sides. Additionally, on the ends of the tent, seal
the seam between the vestibule fabric and the end wall of the tent.
STAKING
Always stake out your tent using all points provided. Staking out your tent
must not be considered optional! YES, your tent can easily be dragged by mod-
est winds even with 45 kg (100 lbs) of gear in it! Tent stakes and guylines are
included with your tent. The webbing loops stitched into the seams above
ground level stakeout points must be utilized to ensure strength and stability
of the tent (especially in broadside winds).
STAKING OUT FOR HIGH WINDS
Proper staking out will allow your Bibler to easily withstand high winds. To set
up your guy lines, cut .3 cm (1/8 in) cord into 2 meter (6 ft) lengths. Tie one
end to the stake out loop at each corner, and tie the other end to the bracing
loop located about .7 m (2 ft) above the stake out loop. On many of the tents,
there are additional tie-out points—tie a 1.6 m (5 ft) piece of cord to these as
well. When pitching, insert the poles and stake out the corners first, then stake
out the bracing loops and all the other tie out points. The more rigidly braced
the tent is, the more effectively it will resist high winds.
