Thank you for purchasing a Chef'n® digital coffee scale.
Your Chef'n® scale is an example of superior design and
craftsmanship. Please read this instruction manual carefully
before use. Keep these instructions handy for future
reference.
Battery Installation
1. This scale operates on 4 "AAA" batteries (included).
Remove any plastic wrap from the batteries before
proceeding. Always replace all batteries at the same time;
do not combine old and new batteries. Do not mix Alkaline,
carbon-zinc (standard) or Nickel-Cadmium (rechargeable)
batteries.
2. Open the battery compartment cover on the bottom of
the scale.
3. Place the batteries into the battery compartments as
indicated by the polarity symbols marked in the battery
compartment.
4. Replace the battery cover. Scale will beep once batteries
are inserted.
5. Replace the batteries when "Lo" appears on the display, or
the readings grow dim or irregular.
6. Battery life: 6 months+
NOTE: Please recycle or dispose of batteries per local
regulations.
WARNING: Batteries may pose a choking hazard. As with all
small items, do not let children handle batteries. If swallowed,
seek medical attention immediately.
PRECAUTION: Do not dispose of batteries in fire. Batteries
may explode or leak. Remove the batteries if the scale will
not be used for a long period of time.
General Weighing Operation
1. Place the scale on a hard, level surface.
2. Press the button to turn the scale on. The display first
shows "88:88", then "-1888.8" when it is ready for use. If the
display does not show "0.0", press the "ZERO" button to
reset the scale to zero.
3. Your scale is set at the factory to weigh in grams/ounces.
To switch to ounces, flip the scale over and adjust the toggle.
4. Press recipe to cycle through timer functions: Count up
timer, French Press, or Pour Over.
5. Place the item to be weighed on the center of the
platform. The weight will display. As you add weight, the
weight displayed increases.
6. Sleek, contemporary design and easy to read backlit LCD
angled display allows for complete visibility.
7. The scale will turn off automatically after 15 minutes of
inactivity. Press and hold the button to turn the scale off
manually.
Tare Operation
You may wish to weigh ingredients in a pour over cone or
French press carafe (not included). In this case, you will need
to tare, or offset, the weight of the container so that only the
weight of the ingredients is displayed.
1. Choose a container that will safely balance on the platform
without tipping or falling. Do not use a heavy container, as
this might reduce the maximum capacity of the scale.
2. While the scale is off, place the empty container on the
scale platform. Turn the scale on. The display will show
"88:88" then "0.0". The weight of the container has been
zeroed out.
3. Add the coffee beans to be weighed. The weight of the
coffee beans alone will display.
4. The weight of additional ingredients may be tared out as
well. For example, if a recipe calls for 25 grams of coffee and
350 grams of water, place the coffee beans into the pour
over cone. Once the correct amount of coffee is weighed,
press the "ZERO" button to offset. Slowly begin pouring 350
grams of water in a circular motion creating a bloom affect.
Both ingredients have been accurately weighed in the same
pour over one or French press carafe.
5. When weights have been tared out, the display will show a
negative number when the items are removed from the scale.
To reset the scale back to zero for a new measurement, press
the "ZERO" button and the scale resets to zero.
Precautions
1. Clean exposed parts with a soft, slightly damp cloth. To
remove stains, use a mild soap. Never use detergents, excess
water, treated cloths, harsh cleaning agents, or sprays.
2. Do not tamper with the scale's internal components. Doing
so will invalidate the warranty on this unit and may cause
damage. The scale contains no user-serviceable parts.
3. Although your scale is designed to be maintenance-free,
it contains sensitive electronic parts. Avoid rough treatment.
Treat it with care to ensure the best performance.
4. This scale is intended for home/consumer use only. It is
not intended for commercial or medical use.
5. This scale is designed to read weights up to 2000g/71oz.
To prevent damage, do not place more than 2000g/71oz
on it.
6. Do not store scale where you store cleaning chemicals.
The vapors from some household products may affect the
electronic components of your scale. Do not store scale on
its side.
7. This scale is an extremely sensitive weighing device. In
order to prevent run down of the battery, do not store
anything on the scale.
8. Do not dispose of batteries in fire. Batteries may explode
or leak. Remove the batteries if the scale will not be used for
a long period of time.
9. Overload Warning: Should "Err" appear on the display
during a weighing, this indicates that the maximum weighing
capacity of the scale has been exceeded. Remove the weight
immediately; otherwise, permanent damage could occur.
