Polaris Nuclear Submarine
Die Entwicklung der Polaris U-Boot Generation hat nach allge-
meiner Ansicht das Kräftemessen zwischen Ost und West in
den 1960er Jahren sehr beeinflusst. Die US-Navy konzentrierte
ihre Produktionsaufträge auf diesen Typ, der zu jener Zeit
Hauptbestandteil der amerikanischen U-Boot-Flotte war. Bei
der Polaris-Klasse handelt es sich um ein U-Boot mit
Nuklearantrieb und einer Bestückung mit ballistischen Lenk -
waffen. Dank des Nuklearantriebs fährt es mit einer Geschwin -
digkeit von über 35 Knoten über Wasser und 20 Knoten unter
Wasser und kann mehrere hundert Stunden unter Wasser blei-
ben. Dieses U-Boot ist ausgerüstet mit 16 Polaris-
Mittelstrecken-Lenkwaffen, die unter Wasser abgeschossen
werden können. Diese verfügen über einen nuklearen
Sprengkopf und eignen sich für Überraschungsangriffe. Ihre
Reichweite beträgt mehr als 2.000 km. Der riesige Lagerraum
für die 16 Polaris-Lenkwaffen wird von der Mann schaft scherz-
haft „Sherwood Forest" genant. Der Unterwasser start der
Polaris-Lenkwaffen geschieht per Druckluft. Insge samt hatte
die US Navy über 50 U-Boote dieses Typs im Ein satz. Standard-
Wasserverdrängung: 5.600 t (unter Wasser 6.700 t); Länge:
115,80 m.

The development of the Polaris generation of submarines is
generally regarded as having had a strong influence on the
balance of power between East and West in the 1960s. The US
Navy concentrated its production orders on this type, which at
that time was the main constituent of the American subma-
rine fleet. The Polaris Class consists of nuclear powered sub-
marines armed with ballistic missiles. Thanks to the nuclear
power it is capable of a speed of over 35 knots on the surface
and 20 knots submerged and can stay underwater for hun-
dreds of hours. This submarine is equipped with 16 Polaris
medium-range guided missiles that can be fired from under
water. These missiles are equipped with nuclear warheads and
are suitable for surprise attacks. They have a range of over
2,000 km. The gigantic magazine for the 16 Polaris missiles is
known facetiously by the crews at "Sherwood Forest". The
Polaris missiles are launched underwater by compressed air.
The US Navy has in total over 50 submarines of this type in
service. Standard displacement: 5,600 tonnes (submerged
6,700 tonnes); length: 115.80 m.
