Nach den fulminanten Siegen der letzten Jahre und insbesondere der
Saison 2002, als Michael Schumacher von einem Rekord zum anderen
jagte und schon frühzeitig erneut den Fahrertitel holte, wurde Ferrari
schon zu Saisonbeginn als WM-Sieger gehandelt. Daher gab es kaum
Anlass, den Wagen umfassend umzugestalten. Der Bolide unterscheidet
sich daher von seinem Vorgänger nur in einigen Details, drastische Ände-
rungen blieben aufgrund der unschlagbaren Performance des Wagens im
Vorjahr aus. Lediglich an der Windleitung wurde intensiver gearbeitet, so
dass auf der Karosserie kiemenartige Strukturen vorzufinden sind. Neu
allerdings ist der leistungsstarke V10-Motor, Typ 052.
Für die Saison 2003 erwarteten aber viele Formel-1-Fans einen anderen
Verlauf als im Vorjahr. Und die Zweifel am erneuten Ferrari Erfolg schie-
nen berechtigt. Schließlich hatte Michael Schumacher schon alles gewon-
nen, was es zu gewinnen gab, und hatte damit wenig Anlass, erneut ver-
bissen um gute Platzierungen zu kämpfen. Doch die Skeptiker wurden
eines Besseren belehrt. Der Deutsche schien erpicht darauf zu sein, auch
in der ewigen Bestenliste ganz oben zu stehen, wie die Siege in San
Marino, Spanien, Österreich und Kanada bewiesen. Überraschend brach
dann aber die Erfolgsserie ab. In fünf Rennen sammelte der Kerpener
zwar wichtige Zähler und die Saison wurde - zur Freude vieler Zuschauer
- wieder sehr spannend. Doch erst in Monza und darauf in den USA
trumpfte der siegverwöhnte Ferrari-Pilot wieder auf. Im letzten Rennen in
Suzuka sollte sich alles entscheiden. Mit lediglich 9 Zählern vor seinem
Konkurrenten war rein rechnerisch noch alles offen. Und tatsächlich fiel
Schumacher nach einer Kollision in der Runde 12 zurück. Doch verbissen
kämpfte sich der Favorit wieder bis auf die Punkteränge zurück, die
Entscheidung wurde mehr als knapp. Das Ende des spannendsten
Rennens einer dramatischen Saison: Rubens Barrichello belegte, nach sei-
nem Sieg im Silverstone-Rennen, erneut Platz 1. Schumacher erzielte ins-
gesamt 93 Zähler, mit 2 Punkten denkbar knapp vor seinem Verfolger.
Fazit: Schumacher sicherte sich den 4. WM-Titel in Folge und somit den 6.
insgesamt. Rubens Barrichello bestätigte sein Talent und steuerte 65
Punkte (Vierter in der Fahrerwertung) zu den 158 Punkten für das Ferrari-
Team bei, so dass Ferrari zum fünften Mal hintereinander den
Konstrukteurstitel gewann.

Following the brilliant triumphs of the past few years and the 2002 season
in particular which saw Michael Schumacher chasing one record after the
other, yet again securing him the driver's title early on, Ferrari were tipped
to clinch the World Championship title right from the moment the season
got underway. There was therefore no reason for Ferrari to extensively
redesign their vehicle. That's why this high-performance racing car differs
from its predecessor in a few details only - on account of the car's unbe-
atable performance in the previous year, it was decided that no drastic
changes would be made. Simply the aerodynamics were worked on more
intensively, resulting in gill-like structures on the bodywork. What is new,
though, is the powerful type 052 V10 engine.
For the 2003 season, however, many Formula 1 fans expected things to
turn out differently than the year before. And the doubts expressed as
regards Ferrari not being able to repeat their previous success seemed justi-
fied. After all, Michael Schumacher had already won everything that could
be won and therefore had little reason to fight perseveringly for good pla-
cings. But he was to teach the sceptics a lesson! The German appeared
keen to stay forever top of the best rankings list, as his triumphs in San
Marino, Spain, Austria and Canada demonstrated. Then to everyone's sur-
prise the chain was suddenly broken. In five races the driver from Kerpen
was still able to accumulate some important points but – to the delight of
the spectators – the season had now become decidedly more exciting. But
it was not until Monza, then afterwards in the USA, that the Ferrari driver,
not accustomed to losing a race, came up trumps again. It all hinged on
the last race in Suzuka. With only 9 points separating him from his nearest
opponent, everything was suddenly open. Following a collision in the 12th
round Schumacher did indeed fall back. But with dogged determination
the favourite fought himself back into the race and onto the scoreboard.
The decision could hardly have been closer. It marked the end of the most
exciting race of a dramatic season: following his win at Silverstone, Rubens
Barrichello again clinched the number 1 position. Schumacher had accu-
mulated a total of 93 points, putting him just 2 points ahead of his pursuer.
The outcome: Schumacher was able to claim his 4th World Championship
title in succession, his 6th overall. Rubens Barrichello confirmed his talent
and added 65 points (4th position in the drivers' placings) to the 158 points
already gained by the Ferrari team, allowing them to win the Constructors'
title for the 5th year running.
