3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
3.1 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
For a natural and correct cooling, the power supply must stand on its four
rubber thrusts and all ventilation openings must be widely cleared.
Before the switching on of the power-supply, make sure that the DC-voltage of
the supply circuit is 230V.
None intervention is authorized inside the casing.
The plug of the mains cord being used as the switch off device, the instrument
must be connected to a socket easily accessible, which has an earth connection.
Any interruption of the protective conductor outside the case or any
disconnecting of the earth terminal may render the instrument dangerous.
The intentional interruption is forbidden.
The common mode voltage between Earth and output terminals shall not
exceed 50V rms.
To respect polarity and charging voltage of the batteries in "Fixed 28V" or
"Fixed 14V".
The nominal capacity of the batteries with free electrolyte is 20 Ah.
Do not recharge unrechargeable batteries.
3.2 BEFORE USE
To connect the bipolar cord + Earth to mains (230V) and switch on with the "On/Off"
switch. The indicators light up, your instrument is ready to work.
4. WORKING
4.1 GENERAL REMARKS
The AL 942 is a stabilized power-supply with 3 voltage possibilities :
- Variable (switch in high position) : the power-supply is adjustable by the knob
"Voltage" from less than 1 to 30V.
- Fixed 28V (switch in middle position) : it's a charger for 24V lead-acid batteries or
a fixed power-supply, which can be used as a 24V-battery.
- Fixed 14V (switch in low position) : it's a charger for 12V lead-acid batteries or a
fixed power-supply, which can be used as a 12V-battery.
Whatever the voltage selection may be, the current is adjustable by the knob
"Current" from 0 to 2A.
4.2 USE AT CONSTANT VOLTAGE
This kind of use is only possible, when the load consumes a current below 2A.
To set the current at the maximum value (knob "Current" thoroughly to the right)
To set the voltage at the value required either :
- "Variable" by the knob "Voltage"
- "Fixed 28V"
- "Fixed 14V"
To connect the load on the sockets (to respect the connection polarity).
4.3 USE AT CONSTANT CURRENT
This kind of use is only possible, when the load consumes a current higher than
the one you have adjusted.
To set the voltage at the maximum value (knob "Voltage" thoroughly to the right)
To short-circuit the + and - outputs (red and black socket).
To set the current at the value required (knob "Current").
To remove the short-circuit.
To connect the load on the sockets (to respect the connection polarity).
The most common use at constant current is the charge of Nickel-Cadmium batteries.
In order to charge them, please respect following instructions :
The voltage of the power-supply must be at least 3V higher than the one of the battery.
Current and charging time must meet the specifications of the battery's manufacturer
(see his instructions manual).
4.4 USE AS CHARGER FOR LEAD-ACID BATTERIES
Charging of lead-acid batteries with free electrolyte.
- To disconnect the battery from your vehicle or instrument.
- To choose the type of voltage "Fixed 28V" for 24V-batteries or "Fixed 14V" for 12V-
batteries.
- To set the current at the maximum value (knob "Current" thoroughly to the right).
- To connect the set of safety silicone leads CSS100 (optional item) with the set of
insulated crocodile clips JPCI (optional item) between the power-supply and the
battery as follows :
Red lead between the + output (red socket) and the + pole of the battery.
Black lead between the - output (black socket) and the - pole of the battery.
- To check current and voltage on the indicators. At the beginning of the charge, the
current is at the maximum value (2A) and the voltage is approximately the same as
- 7 -
