Safety instructions

Before using the device for the fi rst time, read through the Operating In-
structions. They contain information that is important to correct operation.
The guarantee/warranty will be void if damage occurs due to failing to com-
ply with the Operating Instructions! We will not assume any responsibility
for consequential damage!
Nor do we assume liability for damage to property or personal injury caused
by improper use or failure to observe the safety instructions. In such cases
the warranty/guarantee is void.
• The unauthorized conversion and/or modifi cation of the product is prohibited for
safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product!
• The mains adapter is a protection class II product. Only a proper power socket
of the public power supply system may be used as the power source.
• Use the product only with the mains adapter supplied. If the housing of the
mains adapter or of the product exhibits a defect, disconnect the mains adapter
from the power supply immediately and contact your dealer.
• The product must also be disconnected from the power supply immediately
if elevated operating temperatures, unusual operating noises or smoke occur.
• It must be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if the product
exhibits visible damage, ceases to function, has been stored for prolonged peri-
ods in unfavourable conditions or has been severely stressed during transport.
• Repairs to the product should be conducted by a professional. Improper repairs
will render the warranty void.
• The product is not a toy and must be kept out of the reach of children. Children
cannot estimate the risks which can arise through incorrect handling of electrical
appliances. Particular care must therefore be exercised if children are present.
• Operation is permissible only in dry indoor conditions. The product must not
become damp or wet as this poses the risk of a fatal electric shock! Never touch
the product with wet hands.
• Do not place any objects on the product.
• Place the product on an even, horizontal surface.
• The product must not be exposed to extreme temperatures (<0° C / >+40° C),

Commissioning
• Connect the round low voltage plug of the mains adapter to the corresponding socket on the
USB server.
• Using a 1:1 network cable connect the RJ45 socket of the USB server to your network switch
or router.
• Connect the mains adapter to the power socket. The power LED on the USB server lights
up. The "LINK" LED on the network socket should also light up and the "ACT" should blink to
indicate that the network connection is functioning properly.
• Connect a USB device (e.g. an external USB hard drive) to the USB port on the USB server
and switch it on.
• Place the installation CD supplied in the appropriate disc drive of your PC. If the installation
program does not start automatically, open the Windows fi le manager and start the installation
program manually (e.g. "Setup.exe" in the main folder on the CD).
• Follow the instructions on your screen. It might be necessary to restart Windows when the
installation process is complete!
• Install the relevant software for connecting a printer or other device (e.g. USB hard drive) to
the USB server.
• The desktop should now show a new icon via which the USB server can be started.
• Connect your USB device to the USB port on the USB server!
• To connect the PC to a USB device attached to the USB server, press the "Search" button to
search for available USB servers in the network.
• Press "Connect" to make the connection between the attached USB device and the PC (or
"Disconnect" to enable a USB device again for other computers in the network). The device
then becomes available again under Windows as usual.
• To confi gure a static IP address in the USB server, set the option "DHCP Setting" to "Disable"
and enter the IP address required so that it matches the IP addresses in your network (e.g.
if you use permanent IP addresses for your network in the range 192.168.1.x., confi gure
192.168.1.150, provided that the "150" is not yet used).
• The "Sub-net mask" must be the same on all devices in the network (usual default for Win-
dows XP/Vista/7 is 255.255.255.0). Pressing "Submit" transfers this to the sub-net mask to
the USB server and saves it.
Connection to the USB device
In principle, only one PC can be connected to the USB device on the USB server at a time. The
USB server, then, works in a similar way to if the USB device were connected to the PC itself.
If a different user wants to access the USB device, right-click the USB server in the software to
select the option "Request Remote to Disconnect".
The PC that is currently connected to the USB device will then display a system message ".....
has requested you to disconnect. Would you like to disconnect?". If you click "OK", the current
connection to the USB server will be severed and the other user will get the connection to to the
USB device connected to the USB server.
• When setting up/operating the product, make sure that the cable is neither bent
nor squeezed.
• Handle the product with care. It can be damaged by impact, blows or when
dropped even from a low height. Never operate the device immediately after it
has been taken from a cold to a warm room. The condensation that forms could
destroy the appliance or lead to an electric shock.
• Wait until the product is at room temperature and the condensation has evapo-
rated. This may take several hours. Then connect the mains adapter to the
power supply and place the product into operation.
• If the product is not to be used for a prolonged period, disconnect the mains
adaptor from the power socket. Please note that it cannot then be connected to
the USB server or to the USB device attached to it.
• At the installation location and during transportation, avoid high atmospheric hu-
midity, extreme low or high temperatures, dust and fl ammable gases, vapours
and solvents, strong vibrations, strong magnetic fi elds (e.g. near to machines
or loudspeakers).
Please note: unless you connect a USB device to the USB server, no device will
appear in the software display when you click "Search".
For example, Windows will automatically assign an additional drive letter for a USB
hard drive or a USB stick.
A DHCP server is activated in most routers. If you have not activated a DHCP server
in your network, the software may not be able to fi nd the USB server and or the USB
devices connected to it.
In this case, you must set your PC to IP address 169.254.10.1. You can then search
for the USB server through the software. The static default address of the USB serv-
er (unless a DHCP server is present in the network) is 169.254.10.10.
Right-clicking on the USB server detected by the software will allow you to select
the option "View device webpage". Under "Network", you must now change the IP
address of the USB server so that it is confi gured for your network (e.g. 192.168.1.x).
Please note that every IP address must be unique in the network. Once the USB server has
been confi gured, you can reset the PC used for the confi guration to the original IP address.
Please note: if the USB server already has an attached USB device and this is
"connected" to a PC, the confi guration cannot be changed. Sever the disconnect by
pressing "Disconnect" or remove the USB device or devices from the USB server.
The supplied software must be installed on each PC that is to have access to the
USB device on the USB server.
