Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these
safety instructions.
We do not assume any liability for any consequential damage!
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improp-
er use or non-compliance with the safety instructions. The warranty will be void in
such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible because
of safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product!
• The design of the AC adaptor complies with safety class II. Only use a standard mains
socket, connected to the public power supply system, to supply the power.
• This product is not a toy, and should be kept out of the reach of children. Children can-
not assess the dangers arising from incorrect use of electrical devices. Be especially
careful if children are around.
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must be protected from damp and wet, as
there is a risk of a fatal electric shock! Never touch the product with wet hands.
• Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures (< 0°C or > +40°C), direct strong
sunlight, strong vibrations, high humidity or strong mechanical stress.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. It may become a dangerous
plaything for children.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into a
warm one. Condensation that forms might destroy the device. Furthermore, there is a
danger of an electric shock.
Wait until the product reaches room temperature and the condensation has evaporated.
This may take several hours.
Then connect the AC adaptor to the power supply and start to use the product.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental drops,
even from a low height.

Opening and closing the enclosure
cover
• To open, slide the top cover back a bit, in the direction of the ports. After
this, the lid can be removed upward.
• To close the enclosure, place the lid on the enclosure, paying attention
to the correct positioning („FRONT", printed on the inside, must face the
LEDs), then slide it forward until it locks.
Installation of SATA Hard Drives

Switch off the enclosure first, if it is still on.
• After opening the enclosure's top cover, carefully pull the two alu-

minium brackets upward.
• Fix each aluminium bracket to a 8.9cm-/3.5" SATA hard drive, using
°
the four special screws enclosed.
To do this, place the hard drive with the circuit board on a flat, clean
surface (1).
Place the bracket on the side of the hard drive, which is on the oppo-
site side to the ports (2).
Fasten the bracket on to the hard drive, using the four specialscrews
(3) enclosed.
Check whether the bracket can be easily moved after tightening (4).
• Carefully place the hard disk into the enclosure from above, pay
attention to the correct positioning.
The special screws allow the hard drive to be easily inserted into the
enclosure.
• Push down the bracket completely, until it snaps in.
• Close the enclosure cover
Removing and reinstalling hard drives
Switch off the enclosure first. Remove the enclosure's cover.
Pull the hard drive by the handle up and out. Do not use force.
If you have configured the enclosure for „RAID0" or „RAID1"
(see next chapter), you must insert the hard drives back into the same
slot again.
The slots are marked with „1" and „2" (see Figure on the right), a sim-
ilar marking can also be found on the aluminium brackets or on the
hard drives.
Once the hard drives are inserted correctly, the handle pushed in and the enclosure cover closed, the
enclosure can be turned on again.
If you use several hard drives, each of the disks can be provided with a separate bracket (additional
brackets and special screws are available as optional accessories; they are not included in the deliv-
ery).
Thus, several hard drives can be changed quickly and safely.
Selecting the operation modes with the DIP switches.
There are two DIP switches on the back of the hard drive enclosure
(above the On/Off switch).
They allow you to select the operating mode for the hard drive (turn
the enclosure off first, before changing over); also see the inscription
on the enclosure's top cover.
• „RAID0 (Striping)"
The data is distributed on two hard disks, the data transfer rate increases (operation via eSata or
Firewire800 recommended). The total capacity is double that of the smallest of the two hard disks. A
RAID0 always consists of two hard disks. For example:
RAID0:
Ideally, two identical hard disks of the same manufacturer are used, otherwise part of the capacity
on the larger hard drive cannot be used.
• „RAID1 (Mirroring)"
The data is mirrored, i.e. the same data is stored on both hard disks. The total capacity is that of the
smallest hard disk.
The ideal case is to connect two identical hard disks (the same version and capacity). Otherwise, the
smaller of the two hard disks defines the maximum capacity. A RAID1 always consists of two hard
disks. For example:
RAID1:
• „JBOD"
Both hard disks are operated as two individual hard drives.
This operating mode should be selected, if only one hard disk is installed or if the hard disks are to
be changed (e.g. if you want to operate several hard drives in the enclosure alternately; for backup
purposes for example).
If the hard drives (when operated as „RAID0" or „RAID1"), are plugged into the wrong
slots, then all data will be lost when the drive enclosure is restarted!
Attention!
Switch off the enclosure before changing a hard drive!
Then, wait at least 20-30 seconds, until the motor or magnetic disk(s) of the hard drive(s)
has/have completely stopped. Only after this may a hard drive be removed from the enclo-
sure. Otherwise, there is not only the risk for data loss, but the hard drive may also be dam-
aged if the read/write heads makes contact with the magnetic disk. Special care is required
when transporting and storing the hard drives.
Important!
If there is data already on the disks that you want to install in the enclosure, first perform
a backup, otherwise you will lose all the data on both disks!
Also perform a backup whenever you want to change the operation modes, and you still
want to use the same hard drives!
Since the operating modes „RAID0" and „RAID1" are implemented in the drive enclosure
for each piece of hardware, no software or suchlike is required on your computer.

HDD0=500GB, HDD1=500GB, total=1000GB
