Introduction
When we look back to the glory days of rock guitar (mid 60's to mid 70's), some of the most popular amplifier
set-ups were British Marshalls and VOX's... often with multi-speaker cabinets. Playing like Tomi Iommi, Ritchie
Blackmore, Brian May etc., carved their signature sounds on stage and in the studio with these rigs, and in
order to deal with the over-powerings bottom end, they made use of The Treble Booster". Treble Boosters add
top end or higher frequencies to the guitar tone, and depending on how the amplifier is set up, some much
desired overdrive. As much as companies like Dallas (Rangemaster) and Hornby Skewes (Treble Booster)
were solving a bottom-end problem, they had also created a new sound palette! Carl decided it was time to
re-introduce this sound with the PlexiRanger! And leave it to Carl to add a gain channel along with the boost
channel for a one-of-a-kind effect pedal!
BOOST
The pre-gain Boost side of the PlexiRanger contains of two boost controls and two low-cut settings.
First, the Boost knob gives you +15dB of crystal clean volume boost (something Carl does extremely well)...
then you have the Frequency Boost which has two controls. Frequency to determine what frequencies are
being boosted and the Range control which controls how much boost is being applied.
There is also a 4-way switch which engages a slight low-cut (1), heavy low-cut (2) or no low-cut (3).
The Boost switch engages the Boost channel and is indicated by a green LED. The Boost channel works
independently and can be used as a variable treble boost on its own.
DRIVE
The other side of the PlexiRanger is a gain channel with an obvious influence. The Gain knob adjusts the
amount of overdrive, from a light crunch to a full-on overdrive, but as overdrive pedals go, it is not extreme,
acting more like a voicing or color of the Gain and obviously, the Level knob controls the overall level of the
effect. The Plexi footswitch engages or disengages the effect and is indicated by a red LED.
The beauty of the PlexiRanger, is the two channels can be used individually or together, although the whole
point is to have the Boost and frequency boost hit the hot preamp of the Plexi really hard resulting in a tremen-
dous amount of gain and almost violin-like sustain! This is possible with the PlexiRanger even at lower gain
settings!
With all the control on the Boost side, the PlexiRanger may just be the most versatile Boost/Gain pedal on
the market and will not only allow you to copy the great guitar tones from years back, but to create your own
special tones that will cut through any mix either on stage or in the studio.
Connections
The top panel of the PlexiRanger has normal 1/4"input and output jacks, a 2.1mm female inpput for 9V DC
(center negative), and allso a 1/4Remote jack for remote switching of the Boost side (on/off Latching). This
feature allows you to use your Carl Martin Octaswitch (External Switch Jacks) and toggle the effect on and
off... or of course you could use another switcher for the same control.
