2.2 Operation
2.2.1 Putting into Operation
WARNING!
Safe operation of these units depends on them being
started up by qualified personnel with observation of
the warnings in this Instruction Manual.
The general directives for installation and safety
(e.g. DIN/EN and VDE) must be observed in partic-
ular. The failure to observe these directives could
result in death, severe personal injury or substantial
damage to property.
These devices comply with protection class I
(protective
earth
connection)
EN 61010-1. Before switching on, make sure that the
operating voltage set on the device agrees with the
local mains voltage (→ rating plate 230 V/115 V
±10 %, 48 - 65 Hz). Except when used in rooms
with particular protective measures, the mains plug
must only be inserted into a socket with PE contact.
The protective earth effect must not be cancelled by
using an extension cord without PE conductor. The
mains plug must be inserted into the socket before
the device is switched on and before the measuring
and control circuits are connected. Any interruption
in the PE conductor inside or outside the device, or
loosening of the PE conductor connection, could
make the device dangerous. An intentional inter-
ruption in the PE conductor connection is not per-
missible. The local directives concerning grounding
must be observed.
Make sure that only fuses of the specified type and
rated current are used as replacements (→ 2.4 Tech-
nical Specifications). The use of repaired fuses or
the short-circuiting of the fuse holder is not per-
missible.
If it can be assumed that operation free of danger is
no longer possible, the devices must no longer be
used, and must be protected against unintentional
use.
The function generator is ready for operation following
connection of the mains supply and pressing the
switch. The green power LED then
POWER ON/OFF
lights up under the power switch. First of all the unit
type appears for a few seconds in the 5-digit display

followed by the 4-digit version number of the software.

Various internal test programs are carried out during
this time. Any ascertained errors are output on the
display in the form of an error message (→ 2.2.3).
At the end of the start-up procedure, the function gen-
erator is automatically programmed with the device set-
ting which was valid before it was switched off. The
18
data are retained for approx. 7 days after switching off.
After this period, the device is started with the standard
setting (→ 2.2.2).
When switching on the power supplies, start-up pro-
cedures can be initiated by pressing specific keys.
1. Standard setting
All operating parameters of the device are occupied by
the standard settings if the RANGE
and held down for approx. 1 s when switching on the
device.
2. Display test
All segments of the display and the individual LEDs of
the function generator are activated if the three keys

up procedure commences when the key combination is
released.
2.2.2 Standard Setting
The operating parameters valid when the function gen-
erator was switched off are normally set again when the
device is switched on. The standard settings of the oper-
ating parameters are selected either by a special switch-
on process (→ 2.2.1) or if an illegal operating parameter
or a memory fault is detected, e.g. as a result of data
losses, or if the device was not used for more than 7
days. The standard setting of the function generators
TOE 7704 to TOE 7711A is shown in the following
list:
Standard values TOE 7704 to TOE 7711A
