Wheels and Tires
Many types of aftermarket tires and wheels can be adapted for
use on your model. Most will a ect the overall width and the
suspension geometry of the model. The o sets and dimensions
designed into the model's wheels are intentional; therefore, Traxxas
cannot recommend the use of other non-Traxxas wheels with
di erent speci cations. The diameter of the wheels is an innovative
design, and there is a variety of di erent tires available for you to
experiment with in addition to the included tires on the model
(listed in your parts list). Experimentation with di erent types of
tires is recommended to see which ones work the best on the
terrain where the model is run. When selecting tires, consider the
overall diameter and the rubber compound (hard or soft). If the
overall diameter of the tire is signi cantly increased, you will need
to use a smaller pinion gear to compensate for the larger tire. Soft
compound tires with many short spikes generally work better
on hard, dry surfaces. In loose dirt, a tire with large spikes should
perform better. See your parts list for accessory wheels and tires.
TUNING THE SEALED GEAR
DIFFERENTIALS
The action of the front and rear gear di erentials can be tuned
for di erent driving conditions and performance requirements
without major disassembly or removal of the suspension system.
From the factory, the di erentials are sealed to maintain consistent
long-term performance. Changing the oil in the di erential with
either lower or higher viscosity oil will vary the performance
characteristics of the di erentials. Changing to higher viscosity oil
in the di erential will reduce the tendency for motor power to be
transferred to the wheel with the least traction. You may notice this
when making sharp turns on slick surfaces. The unloaded wheels
on the inside of the turn have the least traction and tend to spin
up to extremely high RPMs. Higher viscosity (thicker) oil causes the
di erential to act like a limited-slip di erential, distributing more
equal power to the left and right wheels. Mini Maxx will generally
bene t from higher viscosity oil when climbing, rock crawling, or
racing on low traction surfaces.
Note: Heavier oil will allow power to be transferred even with one
or more tires o the ground. This can make the vehicle more likely
to overturn on high-traction surfaces.
From the factory, the front di erential is lled with grease and the
rear di erential is lled with SAE 30,000W silicone di erential oil.
Only use silicone oil in the di erentials. Traxxas o ers SAE 10,000W,
30,000W, and 50,000W viscosity oil (see your parts list).
The di erentials have to be removed from the vehicle and
disassembled to change/replace oil. Use the exploded views
included with your model to aid in the disassembly/assembly process.
Re lling the di erential:
1. Remove the four 2.5x10mm cap screws to pull the di erential
case and ring gear apart. Work over a towel to collect any uid
that drips from the di erential.
2. Drain the uid from the di erential. You
may wish to remove the planetary gears
from the di erential to make this easier.
3. Place the planetary gears back into the
di erential case (if you removed them).
Fill the di erential case with uid until the
planetary gears are submerged half way.
4. Rejoin the ring gear and di erential case,
using care to align the screw holes. Be sure
the gasket is in place or the di erential
may leak.
5. Install the 2.5x10mm cap screws and
tighten securely.
