T-34/85
Arguably the best medium tank of World War II, the T-34-85 was a crucial
factor in the outcome of the conflict. Over 35,000 were produced, meaning
that it also came to represent, from a Soviet standpoint, the supremacy of
socialist industry over capitalism.
It was the antithesis of German over-engineering. Designers favoured sim-
ple solutions that used fewer resources. It was therefore available in greater
numbers – a telling factor as Axis forces were pushed out of the Soviet Union
and back to Berlin.
The T-34-85 was an up-gunned version of the T-34 tank which carried a
76mm gun that was insufficient at dealing with tanks like the Tiger and Pan-
ther. A new turret allowed the installation of an 85mm gun that was capable
of penetrating German armour with greater ease. This tank also represented
the first proper mass production of a sloped-hull design which meant that
the armour could afford to be thinner while still providing the same effective
protection. Coupled with sloping on the turret, the survivability of the tank
compared to the original T-34 design was much better.

mondiale, il T-34-85 ha giocato un ruolo cruciale nel risultato della Seconda
Guerra Mondiale. Oltre 35.000 T-34 sono stati prodotti nelle varie varianti.
Questo carro armato rappresenta l'antitesi della troppo esasperata ingegneria
tedesca. Progettato in favore di soluzioni più semplici usando poche risorse
rendendolo disponibile in grandi numeri. Questo è stato un fattore determi-
nante per la respinta delle forze dell'Asse fuori dall'Unione Sovietica fino a
Berlino.
Il T-34-85 era una variante del T-34 con il cannone da 76 millimetri che era
insufficiente per affrontare avversari come il Tiger o il Panther. Lo sviluppo
di una nuova torretta ha permesso l'installazione di un cannone da 85 mil-
limetri in grado di penetrare l'armatura dei carri tedeschi con maggiore fa-
cilità. Questo carro è stato anche il primo modello di una prima produzione
di massa con un design dello scafo inclinato: ciò voleva dire che lo spessore
della scudatura poteva essere più sottile, fornendo la stessa protezione. Ac-
coppiato con l'inclinazione della torretta, la sostenibilità di questa vettura era
molto meglio di quella originale del T-34.

Der T-34-85 war ein wichtiger Faktor für den Ausgang des Zweiten Weltkrieges
und wurde oft als bester mittlerer Panzer während dieser Zeit bezeichnet. Über
35.000 Stück wurden produziert, was von einem sowjetischen Standpunkt aus
die Überlegenheit des Kommunismus gegenüber des Kapitalismus unter Beweis
stellen sollte.
Er war das Gegenteil der deutschen überkomplizierten Entwürfe. Die Konstruk-
teure bevorzugten einfachere Designs, die weniger Ressourcen verbrauchten.
Daher war er in größerer Anzahl verfügbar – ein entscheidender Faktor, da die
Achsenmächte aus der Sowjetunion zurück nach Berlin getrieben wurden.
Der T-34-85 war eine waffenmäßig verbesserte Version des T-34, welcher ein
76-mm-Geschütz trug und kaum etwas gegen Tiger und Panther anrichten konnte.
Ein neuer Turm erlaubte den Einbau eines 85-mm-Geschützes, welches die
deutsche Panzerung leichter durchschlagen konnte. Dieser Panzer repräsenti-
erte außerdem die erste richtige Massenproduktion eines Entwurfs mit gewin-
kelter Panzerung, was bedeutete, dass die Panzerung dünner war und trotzdem
dieselbe effektive Panzerung besaß. Zusammen mit dem angewinkelten Turm
war die Überlebensfähigkeit des Panzers im Vergleich zum ursprünglichen T-34
viel höher.

Ce char représentait l'antithèse de l'ingénierie allemande trop méticuleuse.
Les concepteurs préférèrent des solutions plus simples nécessitant moins de
ressources. Il était par conséquent possible d'en fabriquer de plus grandes
quantités ; un facteur important tandis que les forces de l'Axe était repoussées
hors d'Union soviétique vers Berlin.
Le T-34-85 était une variante du T-34 dotée d'un meilleur canon, car les 76
mm de son prédécesseur peinaient à endommager des adversaires tels que
les Tiger ou les Panther. Le développement d'une nouvelle tourelle permit
l'installation d'un canon de 85 mm capable de pénétrer le blindage allemand
plus facilement. Ce char fut également le premier modèle à voir une caisse
au blindage incliné produit en série : cela signifiait que le blindage pouvait se
permettre d'être plus fin tout en fournissant la même protection. Combiné au
blindage sur la tourelle, la durabilité de ce char était bien meilleure que celle
du T-34 d'origine.
