Battery Guard MW 728
Item no. 85 17 44
Intended use
The battery guard MW 728 is used for protecting vehicle batteries against exhaustive discharge via 12V load,
which can be connected to the cigarette lighter.
It may be operated only in vehicles having a 12V on-board voltage.
The maximum connection output/switching output is 10 A.
The product may only be used indoors; never outdoors. Do not expose to moisture, under any circum-
stances.
Use other than that described above will lead to damage to the product and will expose you to additional
risks, such as short circuits, fi re, electrical shocks etc.
The product may not be modifi ed or rebuilt nor should the casing be opened.
Always observe the safety instructions.
This product complies with the national and European legal requirements.
Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these safety
instructions! We do not assume liability for any resulting damage.
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improper use
or non-compliance with the safety instructions. In such cases, the warranty will be null
and void.
An exclamation mark inside a triangle points out important instructions in the operating
manual.
• For safety reasons, any unauthorised conversion and/or modifi cation to the product is not permitted.
• The safety instructions of the devices to be connected must also be observed. You should, therefore, also
carefully read other relevant operating instructions.
• Do not operate the product if it is damaged.
• This product is not a toy, it is not suitable for children. Children do not understand how dangerous electrical
devices can be.
• Never pour liquids over electrical devices and never place objects fi lled with liquid on top of them (e. g.
vases).
• Do not expose the device to high temperatures, dripping or water sprays, strong vibrations or heavy
mechanical stress.
• Never operate your voltage guard immediately after it has been taken from a cold to a warm environment.
The condensation which forms can damage the device. Leave the device deactivated / disconnected till it
comes down to the ambient temperature.
• Do not connect any rechargeable battery at the end of the device, as in case of incorrect poles, the outlet
cannot be secured and the device may be destroyed.
• The minimum input voltage should not fall below 10.5 V/DC! The maximum input voltage should not
exceed 14.4 V/DC!
• Do not leave packaging materials unattended. They may become dangerous playthings for children.
• If you have doubts about how the equipment should be operated or how to connect it safely, consult a
trained technician.
• If you have any questions that are not answered in these operating instructions, please contact our techni-
cal support centre or consult a professional.

Functional Description
The battery guard is connected in series as link between a 12V load, e.g. an ice box and the on-board voltage
socket, usually the cigarette lighter socket.
If during operation (engine shut down) the on-board voltage falls below 11.2 V/DC (± 0.3 V), the battery guard
disconnects the connected load from the on-board power supply. The red display V LOW (2) lights up then.
The connection is restored from a voltage of 12.5 V/DC (± 0.3 V). The red display V LOW (2) disappears
again and the green display READY (3) lights up.
The max. switching output is 120 W or 10 A.
The battery guard has an overload and a short-circuit protection (light 10 A-fuse in connector).
Connection and Getting Started
The time up to deactivation of the connected load (engine off) eventually depends on the
charging status and the age or "maintenance" (acid level in lead acid rechargeable batte-
ries, terminal care) of the on-board battery. Please note that at low ambient temperatures,
one must reckon with a capacity loss even in new on-board batteries (at 0°C approx. -25 %).
To ensure adequate air circulation (cooling), maintain a min. safety distance of 10 cm
from other objects.
Always connect the load in the deactivated condition (sparking!).
• Connect the 12V connector of your load to the cigarette lighter socket (4).
• Insert the cigarette lighter plug (1) into the cigarette lighter socket of your vehicle.
• After the connection, the green display READY (3) lights up and power is supplied to your load.
• As soon as the on-board voltage falls below the threshold of approx. 11.2 V, the battery guard switches the
load off and the red display V LOW (2) lights up.
Maintenance and Care
The battery guard does not require any servicing, except for occasional cleaning with a soft, dry cloth.
Never use aggressive cleaning agents or chemical solutions as these may damage the surface of the case.
Fuse replacement
Make sure that only fuses of the type stated and of the rated current specifi ed are used
as a replacement.
Using repaired fuses or bypassing the fuse holder is not permitted.
If neither the green display READY (3) nor the red display V LOW (2) is illuminated in the device, the fuse of
the cigarette lighter connector (1) may be defective.
Proceed as follows to replace the fuse:
• Pull out the cigarette lighter connector (1) from the cigarette lighter socket of your vehicle.
• Pull out the power plug of your load from the cigarette lighter socket (4).
• Unscrew the safety cap of the cigarette lighter connector (1).
• Remove the defective fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the same type and the same tripping charac-
teristics.
• Screw the safety cap on the cigarette lighter connector (1).
• You may now operate the battery guard again as described above.
Disposal
Electronic devices are recyclable waste materials and must not be disposed of in the household
waste!
Please dispose of the product, when it is no longer of use, according to the current statutory
requirements.
