Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void for damage arising from non-compliance with these
operating instructions.
Liability for any and all consequential damage is excluded!
We shall not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused
by incorrect handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions. The
warranty is voided in these cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible
because of safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product!
• The design of the AC adaptor complies with safety class II. As a voltage source,
only a proper power socket (230V~, 50Hz) connected to the public power supply
system may be used.
• This product is not a toy, and should be kept out of the reach of children. Children
do not realize the danger arising from the incorrect use of electrical devices. Be
especially careful if children are around.
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must be protected from damp and
wet, as there is a risk of a fatal electric shock! Never touch the product if your
hands are wet!
• Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures (< 0°C or > +40°C), direct
bright sunlight, strong vibrations, high humidity or strong mechanical stress.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. It may become dangerous playing
material for children.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into
a warm one. Condensation that forms might destroy the device. Furthermore,
there is an associated danger of an electric shock.
Wait until the product is at room temperature and the condensation has evapo-
rated. This may take several hours.
Then connect the AC adaptor with the power supply and put the product into oper-
ation.
• Handle the product with care. It can be damaged through impact, blows, or acci-
dental drops, even from a low height.
Notes on (rechargeable) batteries
• Keep (rechargeable) batteries away from children; they are not toys.
• Do not leave (rechargeable) batteries lying about openly. There is a risk that the batteries may
be swallowed by children or pets. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
• Leaking or damaged batteries can cause burns on contact with the skin. Therefore, use suit-
able protective gloves.
• Batteries/rechargeable batteries must not be short-circuited, opened or thrown into a fire.
There is a risk of explosion!
• Conventional batteries must not be recharged. Explosion risk! Only charge rechargeable bat-
teries that are intended for this purpose; use a suitable battery charger.
• Please observe the correct polarity (plus/+ and minus/-) when inserting rechargeable bat-
teries.
Version 05/08
• Do not mix batteries or rechargeable batteries with different levels of charge.
°
• Never mix batteries with rechargeable batteries! Use either batteries or rechargeable bat-
teries.
• Operation is possible with rechargeable batteries, instead of batteries. However, due to the
lower voltage (rechargeable batteries = 1.2 V, batteries = 1.5 V) and the lower capacity of
rechargeable batteries, the operating time of the IR remote control is reduced.
Installation of a Hard Disk
• Open the housing cover, on the side. It might be necessary to remove a screw from the cover
first, the cover can the be pushed slightly outwards, along the ribbing, and then be removed.
• Pull out the plastic fixture carefully (do not damage the cable), remember the orientation.
• Insert a 3.5" SATA hard disk into the fixture and fasten it in place with the screws.
If important data are saved on the hard disk, you should make a backup. Upon first
operation of the housing a re-partitioning is necessary in order to use the recording
function. All data saved on the disk are irrecoverable!
• Insert the housing with the 3.5" SATA hard disk into the slot, connect the SATA power cable
and the SATA data cable to the hard disk (observe the orientation).
• Replace the housing cover and close it again with a screw.
Initial operation, connection to the computer
• Insert two AAA batteries, with the correct polarity (observe +/Plus and -/Minus), into the IR
remote control.
• Connect the housing, e.g. via the video/audio outputs (jack-plug connector), with the appro-
priate inputs on your display unit.
• Connect the AC adaptor to the housing and then the AC adaptor to the mains supply.
Afterwards, switch on the housing (move the On/Off switch at the rear to position „I").
• Switch on the housing (POWER switch on the remote control or on the housing).
• Choose the right AV input on your display unit, so that that image of the HD media recorder
appears.
• Upon first operation the built-in hard disk has to be first partitioned and formatted to bring the
recording function into use. This happens automatically, simply follow the instructions on the
screen. Normally, the settings are appropriate for most applications.
Observe however, that data backup is again necessary for a later modification, otherwise all
data are lost!
• After successful partitioning/formatting, you should transfer some multimedia files to the hard
disk. This is possible via USB2.0 and a PC.
You can also connect a USB hard disk or a USB stick with appropriate data to the USB ports
on the rear.
• Connect the housing via the USB cable, included in delivery, to a USB port on your computer.
J
For Windows ME/XP/Vista no driver is required, as this is already part of the oper-
ating system.
• Windows recognises the new hardware and installs the drivers automatically.
While the housing is connected to a computer via USB2.0, all other functions are
switched off. The housing acts like a conventional hard disk housing.
• After loading with appropriate multimedia files, the device may be unplugged from the com-
puter.
Please note:
USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged whilst the PC is in operation. However, if the
connection cable is pulled out while transferring data (or the housing is switched off or the AC
adaptor is unplugged), data may be corrupted.
In Windows ME/XP/Vista an arrow symbol appears in the menu bar during USB operation
using which you can instruct Windows to safely disconnect the device and therefore stop the
data transmission in such a way that the connection cable can be unplugged without any risk.
Connection to a display unit
• Various video and audio outputs are available for connecting to a display unit (monitor, TV).
Ensure that the correct input is chosen on the display unit.
• Control is via the IR remote control; the operating buttons on the HD media recorder itself only
cover a few important functions.
Tips & Notes
• For further instructions, observe the manufacturer's manual in the English language that can
be found on the CD included in the delivery (PDF format, download the free version of „Acrobat
Reader" that is required from www.adobe.com).
• Although the HD media recorder supports many video, audio and picture formats, it cannot be
guaranteed that it will play all of your files.
There are many unmanageable file formats for multimedia files, so that audio and video mal-
functions may occur, or a file may not be playable at all.
Playback programmes for computers are far more flexible here, not only because there are
many different programmes, but also because of frequent updates or newer versions.
It might help to convert a problematic multimedia file, using suitable software, into another for-
mat.
• If possible, select the right video format (e.g. PAL/NTSC) in the settings menu, otherwise the
screen display, via the AV output, is only in black and white.
• Select the right input on the display as well as the right output on the HD media recorder.
• Recording and time shift is only possible with FAT32 partitions and not with NTFS partitions.
With NTFS partitions, only playback of multimedia files is possible.
Maintenance and Cleaning
The product is maintenance-free for you, you should never take it to pieces (except for installing
a hard disk as described in these operating instructions).
Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
To clean the product, use a dry, soft and clean cloth; before cleaning, disconnect the product
from the power supply, disconnect the AC adaptor from the mains plug.
Clean the housing very carefully to avoid scratch marks.
Disposal
a) Product
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the house-
hold waste!
Please dispose of the device when it is no longer of use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
b) Batteries and rechargeable batteries
As the end user, you are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries/rechar-
geable batteries; disposal of them in the household waste is prohibited!
Contaminated batteries/rechargeable batteries are labelled with these symbols to
indicate that disposal in domestic waste is forbidden. The symbols for dangerous
heavy metal constituents are: Cd=cadmium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead (marked on bat-
teries/rechargeable batteries, e.g. under the rubbish bin symbol on the left).
You can dispose of your used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge at
your community's collection point or any place where batteries/rechargeable batte-
ries are sold!
You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment.
