Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these
safety instructions! Liability for any and all consequential damage is excluded!
Nor do we assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The warranty will be
void in such cases!
The product is not a toy and must be kept out of the reach of children.
The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is not allowed for safety and approval
reasons (CE).
The product must not get damp or wet.
Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental drops, even from a
low height.
Installation of a Hard Disk
1. Separate the two halves of the enclosure, by carefully sliding them against each other.
2. Remove the screws from the enclosure.
3. Remove the circuit board from the enclosure and plug it to the terminal strip on the hard disk drive
(SATA data/power supply) with the correct alignment.
4. Fix the board on to the hard disk, using the two large screws.
5. Insert the hard disk, with the correct orientation, into the bottom part of the enclosure.
6. Replace the cover and slide it backwards.
7. Assemble the two halves of the enclosure, using the two small screws.
Connection
There are two different types of USB ports:
• Low-power USB Port
Can supply a maximum power of 100mA, e.g. the USB port for a keyboard or the USB port for a USB
hub without power unit. Such connections are not appropriate for operating the external hard drive!
• High-power USB Port
Such USB port can supply a maximum power of 500mA, e.g. the USB port of a PC/Notebook
or the USB port on a USB hub with its own power unit.
Please note:
Since most 2.5" hard drives require a current of approx. 1A for start up, and approx. 400-
500mA for operation, a low power USB port is not suitable for supplying power to this enclo-
sure! Furthermore, the control circuit board inside the hard disk enclosure also requires a
certain current (approx. 100mA).
Therefore, just one single high power USB port cannot supply enough current to start /
boot the 6.35cm / 2.5" hard drive. This can prevent the hard drive from starting or cause
a low clicking noise.
Some USB ports supply more than 500 mA, although this is not standard.
Therefore, the USB cable enclosed has two USB type A connectors.
First, connect both type A USB-plugs to two free USB ports on your computer/notebook (or to a USB
hub with its own power unit).
Only after this should the mini USB plug be connected to the hard disk enclosure.
Thus, the current of both USB ports is added together (500 mA + 500 mA = 1 A) and the operation of
the external hard disk is ensured.

Driver Installation
The drivers for Windows ME/XP/Vista and Windows 7 are included in the operating system. Connect
°
the external hard drive enclosure with the installed hard drive to your computer; the device is automat-
ically recognised and the necessary drivers are installed.
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive
A new hard disc has to be partitioned and formatted before it is used.
• This can be done easily in Windows XP (click on „administration" in the system settings, then
„computer administration", „data storage" and finally on „drive administration"). This is where you
select the correct hard drive and create a new partition. Allow the system to format the hard drive (a
quick formatting is sufficient, otherwise, the formatting procedure takes a very long time!).
The procedure is similar in Windows Vista or Windows 7.
• Windows ME requires the MS-DOS commands „FDISK" (for partitioning) and „FORMAT" (for formatting).
To do this, start the MS-DOS prompt.
Handling
Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation location and during trans-
portation:
- Damp or too high air humidity
- Extreme cold (<5°C) or heat (>35°C), direct sunshine
- Dust or flammable gases, vapours or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields, such as those found close to machinery or loudspeakers
The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children.
Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.
Do not move the product with an installed hard disk when the latter is in operation. Movement during
operation can cause the read/write head on the magnetic disk to make contact; this could cause not
only data loss but could also damage the hard drive.
Cleaning
Before cleaning the device, disconnect it from the power supply. The use of a dry, soft, lint-free cloth
is sufficient to clean the product.
Tips & Notes
• USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged while the PC is in use.
You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or Windows may crash when the
connection cable is disconnected while data are being transmitted.
In Windows, an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when the hard disk (or other USB devices)
is in use. Click this arrow symbol to „separate" the device, i.e. to terminate data transmission, so you
can disconnect the connection cable without risking the loss of data.
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the hard drive enclosure with the installed
hard disk will also work with a conventional „slower" USB1.1 port – but in this case only with the maxi-
mum USB1.1 speed (in effect approx. 800kByte/s to 1MByte/s).
A rate of several MBytes/s is possible with USB2.0.
• The LED in the enclosure is lit when the power supply is activated, and it blinks during read/
write access. Since the enclosure is very thin where the LED is positioned, the LED's light shines
through at this spot.
Disposal

Some Laptops provide less than 500 mA to their USB-ports. In such cases, operating
the hard disc might be impossible (disc does not rotate, is not initialised or similar). In
which case, an external USB hub with its own power supply unit should be used.
The product should not get damp or wet.
Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room in to a
warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit.
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the power supply
and putting it in to use. This may take several hours.
Electrical and electronic products do not belong to the household waste.
Please dispose of the device, when it is no longer of use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
