5.1

System operation

5.1.1 General
A system is an assembly of a hydraulic pump, hose(s), and one or more tools. The hydraulic pump is
driven by an internal combustion engine, electric motor, pneumatically or by hand or foot power.
This pump displaces hydraulic oil and is capable of building up pressure. The hose is for transporting
the hydraulic oil between the pump and the equipment.
The tool has a hydraulic cylinder containing a piston that can move axially. If the cylinder is pumped full
from the bottom, pressure builds up beneath the piston so that it is pushed to the outside. If the cylinder
is pumped full from the top, the piston is forced back into the cylinder.
The direction of the movement of the cylinder is determined by a control valve, the so-called deadman's
handle.This deadman's handle can be turned to the left or the right, thus determining the direction the
piston moves in. In the neutral position no pressure is built up in the cylinder and the oil flows without
pressure back to the pump. If the deadman's handle is released, it returns automatically to the neutral
position and stops the movement of the piston.
In tools like cutters, spreaders and combi tools the axial movement of the piston starts a mechanism
that then makes a cutting or spreading movement.
The hose is the piece of equipment that connects the other ones to each other and ensures that
a system arises.
The carrying handle has been attached to the tool with a locking ring that allows the handle to be kept in
the desired position.
For industrial applications the Quick-Lock hose-coupling system is used as standard.
5.1.2 Quick-Lock
The Quick-Lock coupling is the quick coupling used on single or duo hoses. In case of duo hoses, the
supply hose and the return hose are bundled together with ties. Each end of the hose(s) has a female
and a male coupler. If you want to connect or disconnect a tool and/or a hose, make sure that the
pressure on the pump coupler is relieved first. If you want to connect or disconnect the couplers push
the lock ring back and connect or disconnect the couplers. Turn the retainer ring on the female side
clockwise to secure or anti-clockwise to unsecure the lock ring.
5.2 Connecting the hydraulic hose(s)
Normally, the unit is equipped with a male and a female Quick-Lock coupler. The hydraulic hose(s) from
the pump must be provided with a male and a female Quick-Lock coupler.
WARNING
Never use damaged couplers.
Always make sure that the pressure relief valve is in the "neutral" position, before you
connect hydraulic hose(s) to the pump.
Make sure that the pump is turned off.
5.2.1 Quick-Lock couplers
Refer to Fig. 4.
• Turn the retainer ring on the female coupler anti-clockwise to unsecure the lock ring.
• Remove the dust cap from the female coupler by pushing back the lock ring. The dust cap slips off.
• Pull the dust cap from the male coupler.
• Check the couplers for dirt and damage and clean them if necessary.
