Introduction

It was in 1984 that McLaren MP4/2 with thé reliable and fuel-effi-
cient TAG/Porsche engine originally dominated FI World Champion-
ship season - Alain Prost won seven Grand Prix and Niki Lauda five,
making a total of twelve wrns out of sixteen, amazingly using just
three châssis.
Yetwith Prost's seven wins to Lauda's five, Niki Lauda scored halfa
point more and won thé FI World Championship. There was
tremendous sympathy for Prost but even though Prost was thé
consistently faster driver, whenever something went wrong he had
either to retire or expire on thé track, whereas Lauda managed to
score points by driving carefully and tactically even in races where
he was not victorious.
TheMP4/2 used acarbon composite châssis pioneered bythe F1
designer John Barnard which in many ways was a direct develop-
ment of thé original MP4/1. One of thé big changes was an enlarged
fuel tank to cope with thé 1.5 Litre, 90° V6 TAG-Porsche turbo engine
's thirst which produced around 750 bhp.
