To locate a fault in the fence line:

1
Push the black earth probe into the soil and clip the red fence clip to the live
fence wire. (For a DVM with clips fitted, clip the black earth clip to the earth
wire and the red fence clip to the live fence wire). Note the voltage reading
for the entire fence.
2
Disconnect a section of the fence and take a voltage reading of the remainder
of the fence. Repeat for each section of the fence. If the voltage reading is
significantly higher than the reading for the entire fence, this indicates a fault
in the disconnected section.
3
Within the faulty section, take voltage readings every 100 m (330') until the
fault is located.
To measure the energizer output voltage:
1
Disconnect the fence wires from the energizer terminals.
2
Hold the black earth probe against the energizer's earth terminal. Clip the red
fence clip to the energizer's fence output terminal. (For a DVM with clips
fitted, clip the black earth clip to the energizer's earth terminal and the red
fence clip to the energizer's fence output terminal)
3
Take a voltage reading and compare with the manufacturer's specifications
for the energizer.
To test the earth system:
1
Turn off the energizer.
2
At least 100 m (330') away from the energizer, short-circuit the fence by
laying several steel rods or lengths of pipe against the fence. In dry or sandy
conditions, it may be necessary to drive the rods up to 300 mm (12") into the
soil.
3
Turn the energizer back on.
4
Take a fence voltage reading. The voltage reading should be below 2 kV. If
not, repeat the short-circuiting procedure using more rods or pipes.
5
Insert the black earth probe into the soil at the full extent of the lead and clip
the red fence clip against the last earth rod. (For a DVM with clips fitted, clip
the black earth clip to the earth wire and the red fence clip to the last earth
rod).
The voltage reading should be less than 0.3 kV. Anything higher than this
indicates that better earthing is required. Either add more earth rods or find a
better location for the earth system.
To change the 9 V battery:
1
Remove the backing screw and carefully prise the case apart.
2
Remove the 9 V battery from the connector and replace with a new battery.
3
Refit the case back and backing screw.
This voltmeter is only suitable for measuring electric fence voltages. The voltage
must be between 0.2 kV and 9.9 kV.
