Before getting started, you will need:
Nursery box
Growing media, starter plugs 50 pack
Seeds recommended for hydroponic
growing
Approximately 4.7 litres of lukewarm tap
water
Method:
As there is a natural success rate of
between 65% and 90% for successful seed
germination, always sow a few extra seeds
to the number of plants you would like to
grow in total.
1. Fill the base tray of the nursery up to the
MAX line with lukewarm tap water.
2. Place the required amount of starter
plugs into the water and leave to soak
for 2 minutes. It is important that the
plug is completely soaked through to
support successful germination.
3. Take the nursery top with round holes
and place the pre-soaked starter plugs
into the holes. Make sure the flat end of
the starter plug goes into the hole first.
The v-shaped end is where the seed
must be placed.
4. Place the nursery top onto the base tray.
Additional water will be sucked up by the
already wet plugs, ensuring that they
are moist throughout.
5. Place a seed(s) on top of each starter
plug. Follow the instructions on the
seed package to see how many seeds
you should use. Seeds with a hard shell
such as coriander should be soaked in
tap water for 24 hours before placing
onto the starter plug. This speeds up the
germination process.
6. Secure the clear vented top section onto
the nursery base tray.
7. Taking care not to spill the water, place
the nursery close to a sunny window.
The seeds should have a minimum of
16 hours of light per day. If the natural
light is low, in winter for example, the
cultivation light can be placed over the
nursery to ensure the seedlings have a
minimum of 16 hours of either daylight
or artificial light, or a mix of both.
8. You can leave the seeds to grow
unattended, except when temperatures
reach above 20 degrees. The water
level should then be checked daily to
ensure that it does not drop below the
MIN water level line. The seedlings must
not be allowed to dry out once they
have been soaked as this will cause
them to die. There is no need to add
fertilizer at this stage, as the seed itself
contains enough nutrients to start the
germination process.
9. Within 5-7 days, the seedlings will
have 2 open leaves. For some plants
like coriander and parsley it might take
a little longer for the leaves to grow.
Check the individual seed packets for the
germination time.
10. Once the seedlings have 2 open leaves
they are ready to be replanted. See
instructions for the next stage within the
cultivation insert set packaging, or go to
www.IKEA.com.
When you are not growing seedlings in the
nursery, the included sprout tray can be
used to grow bean sprouts for salads and
stir-frys. Almost any type of bean can be
sprouted and some should be pre-soaked to
soften the shell before sprouting. Be sure to
follow the instructions for your chosen beans
and wash bean sprouts thoroughly before
eating.
Before getting started, you will need:
Nursery box with sprout tray
Approximately 2.7 litres of lukewarm tap
water
Beans of your choice
Method:
1. Fill the nursery base tray with lukewarm
water up to the "1" line.
2. Place the sprout tray with long slits into
the base tray. The water level should sit
just below the tray.
3. Spread the beans onto the tray. The
beans should not be submerged in water.
4. Secure the clear vented top section onto
the nursery base.
5. Each day and until the root starts to
form, spray the beans with water to
keep them moist. The sprout rate will
vary depending on the bean.
