Safety Instructions
Please read all of the operating instructions before using the product for the first
time; they contain important information about the correct operation. The
warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these
safety instructions! Liability for any and all consequential damage is excluded!
We do not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by
improper handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The
warranty will be null and void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible
because of safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product!
• The design of the AC adaptor complies with safety class II. Only use a standard
mains socket, connected to the public power supply system, to supply the power.
• This product is not a toy, and should be kept out of the reach of children. Children
cannot assess the dangers arising from incorrect use of electrical devices. Be
especially careful if children are around.
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must be protected from damp and
wet, as there is a risk of a fatal electric shock! Never touch the product with wet
hands.
• Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures (< 0°C or > +40°C), direct
strong sunlight, strong vibrations, high humidity or strong mechanical stress.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. It may become a
dangerous plaything for children.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into
a warm one. Condensation that forms might destroy the device. Furthermore,
there is a danger of an electric shock.
Wait until the product reaches room temperature and the condensation has
evaporated. This may take several hours.
Then connect the AC adaptor to the power supply and start to use the product.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
drops, even from a low height.
Getting started
• Connect the round, low-voltage plug from the wall plug transformer with the relevant jack on the
USB server.
• Connect the RJ45 connector of the USB server to your network switch or router via a 1:1-
connected network cable .
• Put the wall plug transformer into a mains socket. The power LED on the USB server lights up.
Furthermore, the LED „LINK", next to the network jack, should light up and the „ACT" LED
should blink. This indicates a functioning network connection.
• Connect an USB device (e.g. an external USB-hard disc) to the USB port on the USB server
and turn it on.
• Insert the CD provided in the appropriate drive on your computer. If the installation programme
does not start automatically, open the directory of the CD, using the File Manager in Windows,
for example, then run the installation programme manually (e.g. „Setup.exe" in the root
directory of the CD).
Follow all instructions of the software. Windows may need to be restarted after completing the
www.conrad.com
installation!
Depending on whether you want to connect a printer or another device (e.g. USB hard disc) to
the USB server, you have to install the appropriate software.
Version 02/10
• There should be a new icon on the desktop, with which the software for the USB server can
°
be started.
• Now connect your USB device with the USB connection on the USB server!
• In order to connect the computer with a USB
device, connected to the USB server, the
„Search" icon (software „Networking USB
Server") has to be clicked and the network is
then searched for available USB servers.
You can create a connection between the USB
device connected and the computer by clicking
„Connect" (and a connected USB device is dis-
connected by clicking „Disconnect" and
becomes available for other computers in the
network).
Afterwards, the device is available as usual
from Windows.
For example, an additional driver letter is automatically assigned to a USB hard disk or a USB
stick in Windows (if necessary, the hardware detection will launch prior to that).
• To set up a fixed IP address, set the option „DHCP Setting" to „Disable" and enter the desired
IP address, so that it matches the IP addresses of you network (e.g. if you use fixed IP
addresses in the range 192.168.1.x enter 192.168.1.150 as long as the „150" is not used).
The „Subnet-Mask" has to be the same for all devices in the network (Standard for Windows
XP/Vista/7 is usually 255.255.255.0).
By clicking „Submit", it is transferred to the USB network adaptor and saved.
Connection to a USB device
Due to the principle used, only one computer at a time can use the USB device connected to the
USB server. The USB server works similarly, as if the USB device was connected directly to the
PC.
If another user wants to have access to the device, select the option „ Request Remote to dis-
connect" by right-clicking on the USB server in the software.
Please note: Connect a USB device to the USB server first. Otherwise, the device is
not shown after clicking „Search".
If you do not have a DHCP server activated (e.g. available in almost all routers), the
software may fail to find the USB server (connect the USB device first, e.g. a USB
stick, see above!).
In this case, your computer has to be set to IP address 169.254.10.1. Then the USB
server can be searched for by using the software. The computer has (as long as no
DHCP server is working in the network) the preset fixed IP address 169.254.10.10.
By right-clicking on the USB server recognised by the software you can then select
the option „View device webpage". There, the IP address of the USB server has to
be changed from „Network" in order for it match it to your network (e.g. 192.168.1.x).
Please observe that every IP address is only to be assigned once in the whole
network.
After configuration of the USB server, the computer used for the configuration can
be set back to the original IP address.
Please note: If the USB server has a USB device already connected to it, and is
„connected" to a computer, the configuration cannot be changed. Disconnect, by
clicking on „Disconnect", or unplug the USB device(s) from the USB server.
The software enclosed has to be installed on every PC that is to have access to the
USB device connected to the USB server.
