Note: This illustration shows the position of the file guide and the filing direction for sharpening knives on the
left-hand side of the chain.
4. Keep the file guide level. Ensure that the 30° mark on the file guide is parallel to the centre of the guide bar (see
Figure 13). This will ensure that you file at a 30° angle.
5. File from the inside to the outside of the cutter until it is sharp. Only file in this direction (see Figure 13)
Note: two or three strokes with a file should sharpen the cutter.
Depth gauges
The play in the depth gauge is reduced when the knives are sharpened. After every second or third sharpening, reset the
cutting depths.
1. Place the depth gauge tool (.025 ") firmly on top of both knives. Ensure that the depth gauge fits into the slot in
the depth gauge tool (see Figure 14).
2. Use a medium flat file. File depth gauge level with depth gauge tool.
3. Remove the depth gauge tool. Using a flat file, round off the front corner of the depth gauge (see Figure 15).
After several hand files, have an authorised service centre or sharpening machine sharpen the chain. This will
even ensure filing.
Replacing the saw chain
Important: do not clamp the chainsaw in the vice to replace the saw chain or guide bar.
Replace the chain when the blades are too worn to sharpen or when the chain breaks. Use only the replacement chain
specified in this manual. Always include a new drive sprocket when replacing the chain. (Note: for the correct chain and
sprocket, see the parts list).
