USAGE
An ADF built into a welding helmet protects the eyes, face, ears and neck against direct and indirect hazardous
light of the welding arc. In case that you have only bought a filter without the helmet, you need to select the
appropriate helmet designed to be used in combination with an auto-darkening welding protection filter. It has to
allow the filter, including the internal and external protection plates, to be adequately mounted into the helmet.
There should be no increased point tensions caused by the fixing frame or mounting system, as they could cause
severe damage to the filter. Make sure that solar cells and photo- sensors are not covered by any part of the
helmet, as this could prevent the proper operation of the filter. If any of these conditions occur, the filter may not
be suitable for use.
Range of Application
The 455 auto-darkening filters a re s uitable f or a ll t ypes o f e lectro-welding: c overed e lectrodes ( MMA, Stick),
MIG/MAG, TIG/WIG, plasma welding, and cutting.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 455
Check for the required protection for specific welding procedure and select the recommended shade,
light sensitivity as well as opening time delay.
Setting the Shade: The auto-darkening filter has two shade ranges, i.e. 5-8 and 9-13. The shade range can be
adjusted by holding down the shade selection button which is located on the filter inside the helmet (shade
range will be indicated in the digital display a number between 5-8 will appear for low range 9-13 for the high
range. The shade is also selected with the same button inside the welding helmet. To adjust the shade press
the internal button once and the shade will increase by one shade repeat this process until the required shade
in that range is achieve. If a lower shade than displayed is required cycle through to the highest shade then
press the shade button again this will set the adf to the lowest shade in the selected range.
Setting the Sensitivity: Most welding applications can be performed with welding light sensitivity set to
maximum. The maximum sensitivity level is appropriate for low welding current work, TIG, or special applications.
The welding light sensitivity has to be reduced only in some specific surrounding lighting conditions in order
to avoid unwanted triggering. As a simple rule for optimum performance, it is recommended to set sensitivity
to the maximum at the beginning and then gradually reduce it, until the filter reacts only to the welding light
flashes and without annoying spurious triggering due to ambient light conditions (direct sun, intensive artificial
light, neighbouring welder's arcs etc.).To set the Sensitivity to maximum turn the middle dial labelled sensitivity
clockwise to reduce the ADF'S Sensitive turn the dial anti-clockwise
Setting the Delay: The opening time delay can be adjusted from 0.1 to 1.0 seconds. It is recommended to use
a shorter delay with spot welding applications and a longer delay with applications using higher currents and
longer welding intervals. Longer delay can also be used for low current TIG welding in order to prevent the filter
opening when the light path to the sensors is temporarily obstructed by a hand, torch, etc. direct sun, intensive
artificial light, neighbouring welder's arcs etc.).To set the delay to maximum turn the left hand dial labelled delay
clockwise to reduce the delay turn the dial anti-clockwise.
Setting the Function Mode: There are two modes of operation that can be selected: welding or grinding.
By selecting the Grind mode, the filter switches off and it will not be triggered by the sparks generated during
grinding. To set the ADF to grind mode hold the arrow button located internally next the digital display (If the ADF
is set in 5-8 mode you will need repeat this process again). When the ADF is set to Grind mode the led inside
the helmet lights and the shade number shown in the digital display shows shade 4. To return to the welding
mode hold the arrow button again. Before restarting welding work, the ADF should be set back to the »Weld«
position and in the correct range and the warning LED not lit and the shade should be showing your required
welding shade.
Replacement of batteries:
Place the helmet face down. Tilt the headgear unit the sweatband is closer to the top of the helmet. Now undo
the thumb screw turning it anti-clockwise (Fig. 1), remove the thumb screw and put to one side.
Lift the retainer frame upwards until it is at an angle of roughly 45 degrees (Fig 2). The gently pull the frame
