Playback Compatibility
A 4 track stereo tape deck can playback both 4 track and 2
track tapes and from the standpoint of compatibility
has the widest possible range of utilization. When playing
a 2 track stereo tape on a 4 track deck, track #1 will be
completely covered by the head. Track #2 will be slightly
off alignment but stereo can still be enjoyed by compen-
sating for the slight loss of track #2 volume with the
Volume or balance controls. On the other hand a 4 track
tape cannot be played back on a 2 track deck as both tracks
#1 and #2 will be reproduced together resulting in mixed,
unintelligible sound. See Fig. A which shows the standard
NAB track configurations for 2 track and 4 track recording.

Setting the Playback Level
The OUTPUT Level Controls regulate the audio level to
your stereo amplifier and also the listening level to your
headphones, allowing you to monitor the level and quality
of the sound fed to the amplifier. When listening through
an amplifier, it is best to have the deck's output approxi-
mately the same as the original recording level.
1, Set the OUTPUT Selector Switches to TAPE.
2. Set the OUTPUT Level Controls to approximately the
2 o'clock position.
3. Begin playback by depressing the » Button.
4, Adjust the OUTPUT Level Controls so that the loudest
passages on the tape indicate about 0 VU,
. Make all listening volume adjustments (for foud speaker
output) by changing the volume controls on the stereo
amplifier,
6. Further changes to the OUTPUT Level Controls are not
needed unless the VU Meter pointers greatly exceed
OVU.

1. Ausgangswahlschalter auf TAPE stellen.
