1 Scope of Delivery

The following are contained in the scope of delivery of the DCF77 – Time synchronization package for
WinCC:
Active DCF77 antenna with angle mount and 20m cable.
3 1/2„ Floppy Disk with DCF77 receiving service for Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Operating Instructions for the DCFRS antenna.
Installation Instructions for the DCF77 receiving service.

2 Commissioning

Commissioning of the DCFRS time receiver for WinCC is done in two stages:
Installation of the DCF77 receiving service software on the PC.
Erection and connection of the antenna.

2.1 Functional Description

The DCFRS antenna is used for receiving the DCF77 time transmitter which transmits the official time
of the Federal Republic of Germany. The transmitter in Mainflingen near Frankfurt transmits every
minute the current date and current time on the long wave frequency 77.5kHz. By virtue of the low
frequency, buildings and landscape do not significantly hinder the time signal, as long as it is not
screened by metal. With the transmission power of 27 kW the time signal can be received in Central
Europe if the environment is without disturbance.
The antenna and the entire receiver electronics are integrated in the antenna housing so that direct
connection can be made to a serial RS232 interface of a PC. Supply of the antenna with energy is
done through the control lines of the RS232 interface. On installing the driver the selected interface
(COM1, COM2, etc.) must be specified.

The DCF77 time source provides a pulse every second ideally of 100ms or 200ms length. Each pulse
length has a binary value (100ms = logic 0, 200ms = logic 1) assigned to it. After 58 pulses the 59
pulse is omitted, the distance of 2 seconds between two pulses signalizes a minute change. In the
previous 58 pulses the time and the date of the following minute was transmitted. The new time is
valid with the increasing pulse flank after the 2-second pause (synchronization marker).
Through the RS232 compatible output level there can be a direct connection to a serial RS232
interface. The supply of energy to the antenna is via the control leads of the RS232 interface.
