Outdoor USB WLAN Adaptor
Item no. 98 66 35
Intended use
The WLAN adaptor is intended for connection to a USB port on a computer (or a USB hub connected to
the computer) in order to establish a radio connection with other appropriate devices (e.g. WLAN-Router).
The special construction design and the long USB cable makes the product suitable for outdoor use.
This product complies with the applicable National and European requirements. All names of companies and

Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these safety
instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequential damage!
Nor do we assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improper use
or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such cases, the warranty will be null
and void.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modifi cation of the product is not permitted for safety and
approval reasons (CE).
• The WLAN adaptor is intended for installation and use in outdoor areas. Do not operate the
product in or under water.
• The product is not a toy and must be kept out of the reach of children. Install and use the
product where it is out of the reach of children.
• Do not operate the device in environments where there are high levels of dust, fl ammable
gases, vapours or solvents. There is a danger of fi re and explosion!
• Do not carelessly leave the packaging material lying around since this may become a danger-
ous toy for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental drops, even
from a low height.
Installation
• The WLAN adaptor can be mounted on to a vertical mast, on its curved back. It can be attached using
cable ties, for example.
The WLAN adaptor may also be fastened directly on to a vertical wall. Use the wall bracket enclosed in the
delivery.
Pay attention when drilling and tightening the screws that no cable or pipes are damaged.
Depending on the subsurface, suitable screws and, where necessary, wall plugs are required
(not included in the delivery).
Make sure during the installation that the case opening and the cable outlet face downward;
otherwise, water can penetrate into the WLAN adaptor.
• Carefully push the cover down and remove.
• Connect the MiniUSB stick to the appropriate port on the WLAN adaptor. Place the cable in a loop or a
loose knot. This prevents the plug from becoming disconnected.
• Replace the cover correctly.
• Run the cable to your computer.
If the cable needs to be run through a window, make sure the cable is not crushed. Make a loop
in the cable close to the lead-through, to let the water drip down and not run along the cable.
Seal the cable lead-through in a suitable manner (e.g. silicon sealant, etc.).
Installation of Driver/Software
• Insert the enclosed CD in an appropriate drive on your computer. If the installation does not start auto-
matically, open the CD's content e. g. with the Windows fi le manager and start the installation program
manually (e.g., start "Autorun.exe" or "setup.exe", note the contents of the CD). Follow all of the program's
instructions.
• Connect the WLAN adaptor to the computer. Windows recognises the new hardware and completes the
driver installation.
For the connection, only use a USB port on a computer or a USB hub with an separate mains
adaptor; a USB port that can supply a current of 500 mA is required.
• Before the WLAN adaptor can function correctly, it might be necessary to restart the computer.
For additional information, see the manufacturer's instructions (either enclosed separately or as
a PDF on the enclosed CD).
Tips & Notes
www.conrad.com
• USB does not function when DOS or Windows are in safe mode (or only restricted to USB keyboard/
mouse). The WLAN adaptor can not be used.
• If there is a network or system administrator who is responsible for your network (for example in a larger
Version 05/12
company) let him set up the connection and the confi guration, do not install the device yourself.
• The indicated maximum data transfer rate (e.g. 54MBit for 802.11b/g, which means about 6.5MByte/s)
is never obtained in reality. The same applies to 802.11n. This is due to different transfer mode systems,
transmission errors, the distance between WLAN stations, etc.
• It can take Windows a while before the computers become visible in the network. If necessary, check the
access rights (depending on the operating system used) or the fi rewall or anti-virus program settings.
There are numerous possible reasons why a network connection does not succeed. Please refer to the
appropriate specialist literature or to a specialist technician.
• If you are not using a DHCP server (e.g. integrated in all WLAN DSL routers), you should assign a fi xed IP
address to each PC (and of course to all other devices in the network, e.g. to the router, network printer or
the like).
For example, set the fi rst computer to 192.168.1.1, the second to 192.168.1.2, etc. The fi rst three numbers
must be the same for all the computers, the last number can range from 1 to 254. The "subnet mask" has
to be set to 255.255.255.0 on all computers.
Please note, an IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) must not be assigned twice on the same network.
• You should always encrypt your network connections, to prevent unauthorized access, i.e. to your WLAN
DSL router. You should preferably use "WPA2" encryption.
• The wireless coverage depends on the ambient conditions, and can be restricted by:
- High-frequency interference of all types (computers, monitors, mobile phones)
- Any kind of housing and vegetation
- Conductive metal parts that are close to or inside the device, e.g. cables, radiators, metallised insulated
glass panes, reinforced concrete fl oors, etc. and even the computer case.
- Infl uences on the aerial's transmission characteristics, due to the distance of the transmitter or receiver
from conductive areas or objects (including the human body or fl oor).
- Broadband interference in urban areas that reduces the signal-to-noise ratio; the signal is not recog-
nised because of the "noise"
- Irradiation from insuffi ciently shielded electronic devices, e.g. computers operated openly, or similar.
- Movements of the receiver/transmitter
- Too short/long distance from the receiver/transmitter
- Other devices in the 2.4 GHz Band (e.g. Bluetooth, wireless video transmission systems)
