The RAF's search and rescue unit is tasked with rescuing
aircrews who have made forced landings or ejected from
their aircraft due to combat or mishap. No.202 Squadron
RAF was based with No. 22 Squadron at RAF Finningley.
Later, three helicopter squadrons were formed, two of
which - Nos. 22 and 202 Squadrons - were equipped with
Sea Kings and based in England, while the third squadron,
No.84 equipped with Griffon HAR.2 helicopters, was
based in Cyprus. While these are officially military units, a
large portion of their activity is civilian in nature, perform-
ing rescue missions for shipwrecked maritime personnel,
stranded or injured mountaineers, etc.
