Using Metolius Helmets
Metolius helmets are for climbing and mountaineering use only. Do not
use this helmet for any other activity. The following instructions explain the
basic usage and limitations of Metolius helmets, as well as several of the
most common examples of misuse. However, there is an infinite number
of ways to misuse any piece of climbing gear. No manual can cover every
possible scenario. It is your responsibility to learn the correct techniques for
all of your other climbing gear. Instruction manuals can help but they are no
substitute for qualified instruction and real world experience. We strongly
recommend that you learn to use all climbing gear under the supervision of
a certified guide.
Metolius helmets are designed to offer protection both from falling objects
hitting you and from impacts sustained when you fall off. However, no
helmet can protect you from all possible impacts. The use of a certified
helmet greatly increases your safety, but it does not replace caution and
good judgment.
Your helmet must be retired after any significant impact. The materials used
in helmets attenuate force by compressing and/or breaking apart. Once
a helmet has sustained a significant impact it will not provide adequate
protection for any subsequent impacts. It is extremely difficult to determine
the true extent of impact damage visually. If you have any reason to doubt
the integrity of your helmet, retire it.
The performance of this helmet may be compromised in temperatures below
-20° C or above +35° C.
Fit
Your helmet must fit correctly in order to be effective. The Metolius Climbing
Helmet can be adjusted to accommodate head sizes from 21.5 – 23.5 in.
(55 – 60 cm).
1. Loosen the retention system by
sliding the webbing strap through the
tri-glide. (Illustration 1).
2. Place the helmet on your head
making sure your forehead is against
the front of the helmet and the front
of the helmet sits low on your brow
(Illustration 2).

3. Adjust the retention system to
cradle the base of your skull snugly
and comfortably. Adjust the height of
the retention system with the hook
and loop attachment in the top of the
helmet. Adjust the width by sliding the
webbing strap through the tri-glide.
(Illustration 3).
4. Adjust the chin strap so the slide
glide sits just below your ear with
equal tension on the front and rear
straps (Illustration 4).
5. You should not be able to displace
the helmet by pulling upward on the
front, rear or sides.
6. Use the extra pads included with
your helmet to achieve a comfort-
able, snug fit with even pressure all
the way around your head.
