16. „Formieren" der Bargraph-Röhre
Manche Röhren sind aufgrund der langen Lagerdauer von
über 20 Jahren anfangs nicht in der Lage, den vollen Skalen-
bereich darzustellen. Um dies zu ermöglichen, müssen sie
mit Überstrom solange betrieben werden, bis sie die ge-
samte mögliche Höhe der Glimmsäule anzeigen können.
Dazu ziehen Sie den Operationsverstärker IC2 aus seiner
Fassung
– ganz wichtig! – und drehen die Leiterplatte um.
Sie finden unterhalb des Leistungstransistors T1 drei
Lötbrücken X1, Y1 und Z1.
Setzen Sie zwischen Y1 und Z1
eine Lötbrücke.
Nehmen Sie nun die Röhre zu Hand und
löten Sie die drei Anschlussdrähte an die Lötpads A, K und
K1 an, wobei der äußere Draht der Röhre, der mit dem
Andodengitter verbunden ist, an „A" angelötet wird. Verlegen
Sie die Anschlussdrähte und die Röhre so, dass sie keinen
Kurzschluss mit der Leiterplatte bekommen und stecken Sie
erneut die Stromversorgung an. Die Röhre muss nun auf-
leuchten und eine lange Glimmsäule anzeigen, die bis zur
roten aufgedruckten Markierung am oberen Ende der Röhre
reichen sollte. Ist dies nicht der Fall und die Glimmsäule ist
kürzer, so lassen Sie nun so eingeschaltet, bis die Glimm-
säule diese Höhe erreicht hat; dies kann gut bis zu 15 Minu-
ten dauern; seinen Sie also nicht ungeduldig. Die Röhre wird
dabei recht warm.
Hat die Säule die Höhe erreicht, schalten Sie die Spannungs-
versorgung aus, löten Sie die Röhre ab, entfernen die
Lötbrücke Y1 und Z1 und setzen das IC2 wieder ein.
17. Der Gehäusezusammenbau
Allgemein gilt, dass wir das NixieTherm Mk II Gehäuse nicht
nur von „oben nach unten" sondern auch noch „Kopfstand"
zusammenbauen werden. Dazu ist es notwendig, dass die
Skala gehalten wird, z.B. durch einen kleinen Schraubstock.
Bevor Sie aber die Skala einspannen, bekleben Sie die
Spannbacken bitte mit einem Band o.ä. um Kratzer im Plexi-
glas zu vermeiden.
Beginnen Sie mit dem Abziehen der einen Schutzfolie der
Skala. Setzen Sie dann in die beiden Aussparungen vorsich-
tig die Befestigungsklammern ein und schieben danach die
Röhre hindurch.
Wichtig: Die Klammern haben auf der Rückseite eine Nut
(Pfeil im Bild), daher müssen die Klammern auch so einge-
setzt werden, dass die Nut „hinten" ist.
Spannen Sie die Skala so bestückt vorsichtig jetzt „Kopfstand"
in Ihren Schraubstock ein; d.h. das Skala steht auf dem Kopf
und die höchste Temperatur befindet sich bei den Spann-
backen.
Passen Sie hierbei bitte auf, dass Ihnen die Röhre nicht aus
der Skala herausrutscht.

16. "Formatting" the bargraph tube
Many of the tubes will fail, due the long storage time for more
over 20 years, during first powering up to display the full length
glow. To archive that, these tubes must be powered with over
current for some time as they will show the full display with
the following procedure:

You'll see near the position of T1's pads three solder jumpers
marked X1, Y1 and Z1.
Connect now pads Y1 and Z1 together.
Pick up the tube and connect the lead wires to the pads
marked A, K and K1. The outer wire, which is internally
connected to the tube's anode mesh must be soldered to the
"A" pad. Now place the tube on your desk and pay attention
not to produce any short circuits between the wires and the
board. Turn on the power supply again.
Now the tube must light up with a long glow, which should as
long as it matches the red printed marking ring at the top of
the tube. If this fails and the glow lenght is shorter, keep the
circuit powered on as the glow reaches the marking.
This „formatting" may take up to 15 minutes, so don't be
impatient. The tube will get warm during this procedure.
If the formatting is finished, plug off the power supply, de-
solder the solder jumper from Y1 and Z1 and also the tube's
wires.
Re-plug the operational amplifier IC2 into its socket.
17. Assembling of the enclosure
It is necessary to note that we will mount the NixieTherm Mk
II enclosure not only „from the top to the bottom", but also
upside down. Therefore it is necessary to secure the
thermometer's scale e.g. with a small vice. But before you
clamp the scale please cover the jaws with any kind of
protective material so as not to scratch the scale's Plexiglas.
Start with peeling off the protective film from the scale. Now
apply carefully both tube clamps into the scale's notches.
Note: The clamp itself has also a small notch on its back
side so fit them in that way that this notch is located on the
„rear" of the scale.
Now fit this "scale-tube-combination" to your vice in such a
way, that the „Mr.Nixie logo" is readable upside down and
located near to the jaws.
Pay extra attention that the tube doesn't drop out during
mounting and do not tighten the jaws too tightly.
