ly 1930s, O pel i ntroduced a fastlighttruckandcalled it Opel B litz(lightning) andin1935
bylBlitz
opened t hebestandmostmodern truckfactory in theworldin Brandenburg. Although
lightin weight,the Blitzdesign couldcarry a considerable payload.A provensix-cylinder
engine from anotherGM company, B uick,providedthe power.tonnes(2.76tons), andfi-
nally tothethree tonnes (3.31 tons)thattheStypecould transport cross-country. Inthe
GermanArmythe OpelBlitzwas oneof the most used3-ton vehiclesin use.Themain
body(undercarriage andcabin) where constructed f ortwotypes, t heS-type a2x4versi-
onandtheA-type a4x4version, thereareonlysmalldifferences in thabodyandunder-

Inorder to provide thefighting troopswithsupplies s uchasammunition, fuelandprovi-
sionsontheextremely h ardterrain attheEastern F ront, s tandard 3 ton (4x 2) vehicles
hadtherear axleremoved a ndwereequipped w ithrunning gearfromtheCardan Lloyd
chassis. The tracks originated from the armored tank Pz l. This conversion reduced the
carryingcapacity to 2 ton.This half-tracked vehicle, w hichwasbuiltfrom 1942onwards,
was known as the "Maultier or mule.
Bythe war's end,Opelfactorieshadchurnedout over100,000Blitztrucksalonefor the
German w areffort. These tookmanydifferent f orms,suchasgeneral-purpose
buses, r adiotrucks,ambulances, guncarrying platforms a ndeven largelimousines f or
high-ranking officers.TheOpelBlitzwas oneof the mainworkhorsesof the German Ar-
