1. Introduction to the life cycle
of Lithium-Iron-Phosphate-
Batteries
When using or handling rechargeable Lithium-Iron-
Phosphate-Batteries (Li-Fe-Po4), regular mainte-
nance is obligatory.
Please read and respect the guidelines in this
document for a safe usage and prolonged life-cycle
of the Li-FePo4 batteries.
Do not leave the battery unused in the appliance or
store it for a longer term.
If the battery has been left unused fore for more
than 6 months, check the state of charge.
If required, recharge the battery or recycle it as
recommended.
Usually, the estimated life cycle is about 10 years
or 4 000 cycles, depending on what occurs first.
One cycle is defined as the span of fully dis-
charging a fully loaded battery and recharging
it to 100 %.
Li-Fe-Po4 batteries have a restricted life span and
gradually lose their capacity.
The loss of capacity cannot be avoided.
A battery with a lower capacity means a reduced
power supply time for the product.
Stored or unused Li-Fe-Po4 batteries slowly
continue to discharge themselves (self-discharge).
Regularly check the state of charge of your battery.
2. Maintenance
• The capacity of your battery will change
depending on the configuration and usage
of your product.
• Thoroughly check the batteries near the end
of the estimated lifetime.
• Consider changing the battery, when it displays
the following characteristics:
- The capacity falls below 80 % of the
original capacity.
- The charging time increases drastically.
• If the battery is not in use or is stored for a longer
period, follow the instructions in this document.

3. Charging
The Lithium Powerbloc can be charged with almost
all vehicle generators to a maximum of 14.4 V. Do
not overcharge the battery as this causes damage.
Lithium Powerblocs can be charged much quicker
than usual batteries. Charging a lead battery takes
about 7 - 14 hours with an increase of the internal
resistance and a decrease of the charging current.
The Lithium Powerbloc can be charged with a 1
C current within an hour. If the charge current is
increased to 2 C, the charging time is reduced to
30 minutes. Do not charge the battery with more
than 5 C as this will damage the battery. We rec-
ommend the usage of Li-Ion chargers to charge
the Powerbloc. You may also use chargers for lead
batteries.
NOTE: When troubleshooting a twin-battery
configuration, always inspect the single batteries
or single slots. A defective battery may hinder the
charging process for the other battery and cause
damage to it.
4. Storage
• Charge or discharge the battery to 50 % state
of charge (SOC) before storage.
• Charge the battery to 50 % SOC at least once
in two years.
• Disconnect the battery from all consumer loads
or store them separately from the product.
• Store the batteries in a cool environment.
Note: The battery minimally discharges itself
during storage. Temperatures over 20 °C (~ 68 °F)
reduce the life cycle of the stored battery.
