Installation at up to 45
When installing a MAC One VDO Grid Mount array at an angle of less than 45 from vertical, it is
possible to mount columns of fixtures in VDO Grid Mount Rings using the Dual VDO Header as
described under 'Vertical free-hanging installation' on the previous page, but you must provide
additional stabilization to each column and you must use Dual VDO Headers – do not use Single
VDO Adapters. Do not use Single VDO Adapters to install a VDO Grid Mount array at any other angle
than hanging vertically.
Note that you must also provide additional stabilization as described below if the
installation can be exposed to wind forces.
To create a stabilized installation:
1. Create the column of fixtures in VDO Grid Mount Rings as described in the
previous section, 'Vertical free-hanging installation'.
2. Bolt a half-coupler clamp securely to one omega bracket for every second
fixture in the column and for the top and bottom fixtures.
3. Fasten the first omega bracket to the base of the top MAC One fixture in the
column, inserting the bracket's quarter-turn fasteners into the receptacles in
the base of the fixture and turning them a full 90° to lock them.
4. Fasten an omega bracket to the base of at least every second MAC One
fixture and to the base of the bottom MAC One fixture in the column.
5. Use the half-coupler clamps to fasten a rigid piece of metal piping or bar to
the fixtures to stabilize the column as shown in illustration on right.
6. Loop safety cables that are approved for the weight that they will secure
through the safety cables next to them and around the stabilizing bar as
shown in illustration on right.
Installation at between 45
When installing a MAC One VDO Grid Mount array at an angle of between 45
and 90° from vertical (where 90° from vertical means that the array is
horizontal), do not try to suspend the array from a Dual VDO Header or Single
VDO Adapter. Instead, fasten single columns of fixtures in Grid Mount Rings to
a rigging truss or secure, rigid metal pipe as described below. Respect the
following requirements:
•
Fasten the first and last Grid Mount Ring in the column to the truss or pipe
by means of an omega bracket and half-coupler clamp.
•
Fasten every second Grid Mount Ring to the truss or pipe by means of an
omega bracket and half-coupler clamp.
•
Connect each Grid Mount Ring to both the Ring before it and the Ring after
it by means of VDO Couplers.
To create an installation that is angled at between 45° and 90° from vertical:
1. Create the column of fixtures in VDO Grid Mount Rings as described in the section Vertical free-
hanging installation above.
2. Fasten Omega brackets to the base of the fixture in every second Grid Mount Ring by inserting
the brackets' quarter-turn fasteners into the receptacles in the bases of fixtures and turning the
quarter-turn fasteners a full 90° to lock them.
3. Attach half-coupler clamps to all omega brackets.
4. Suspend the column by fastening the half-coupler clamps to a secure rigging truss, rigid piping or
metal bar that can safely hold the weight that it will support.
5. Loop safety cables through the safety cables on either side of them and around the supporting
structure as shown in illustration above right.
