Notes on Working with the Electric Planer

The quality of the results is determined by the condition of the blades, the
working speed and the cutting depth. Deep cutting and high working speed
will lead to rather rough cuts. The best results are achieved with sharp knives,
slow speed and a very low cutting depth.
Guide the planer with even speed and a steady hand. For the best results,
take enough breaks during work to avoid tiring.

Replacing the Knives

Before undertaking any work on the machine, always pull the power plug.
The knives are clamped into notches in the knife shaft with their carriers.
Loosen the clamping screws by screwing them into the black knife carrier until
the knife can be moved to the side in the carrier.
To the left of the knife shaft is a notch in the housing, through which the knife
can be pushed out to the side. The height of the knife can be adjusted with
the two Allen head screws in the knife carrier. Set the knives in such a way
that the blades just do not touch the work piece when the front sole is set in
the lowest position.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Before undertaking any work on the machine, always pull the power plug.
Remove all wood chips from the machine and the ventilation slots. Make sure
the knife shaft can not be blocked. Do not use aggressive chemicals, abra-
sives, solvents or liquids to clean the machine. Use only a soft, slightly mois-
tened cloth.
Regularly check all screws on the unit for tightness.
Make sure the knives are sharp and correctly adjusted. Have dull knives
sharpened or replace them.
Have a damaged power cable replaced by a professional.
Occasionally check the condition of the drive belt and the carbon brushes or
have these checked by a professional. The belt may have no more than 5mm
of slack in it, and the carbon brushes are worn down at 4 mm.
Only attempt to repair the machine yourself if you have the necessary skills.
Otherwise please turn to a professional or the Westfalia customer support
department.
