Installation of a Hard Disk
1. Remove the two screws from the rear cover.
2. Carefully pull out the cover lid with the
attached board from the enclosure.
3. Plug the hard disk correctly on the terminal
strip of the circuit board.
4. Fasten the hard disk to the board using the
two provided short screws.
5. Depending on the thickness of the used hard
disk (9.5mm or 12.5mm) either stick the thick
or the thin foam spacer on the upper metal lid
of the hard disk (stick it to the front edge of
the hard disk).
6. Now slide back the hard disk with the board

Connection
There are two different types of USB ports:
• Low-power USB Port
Can supply a maximum power of 100mA, e.g. the USB port for a keyboard or the USB port for
a USB hub without power unit. Such connections are not appropriate for operating the external
hard drive!
• High-power USB Port
Such USB ports can supply a maximum power of 500mA, e.g. the USB port of a PC/Notebook
or the USB port on a USB hub with its own power unit.
Therefore, the USB cable provided has two USB type A connectors.
First connect both type A USB-plugs to two free USB ports on your computer/
notebook (or to a USB hub with its own power unit).
Only afterwards the mini USB plug is to be connected with the hard disk case.
Thus, the current of both USB ports is added (500 mA + 500 mA = 1 A) and the operation of the
external hard drive is ensured.

Driver Installation

a) Windows ME, XP, Vista and Windows 7
The drivers for Windows ME/XP/Vista and Windows 7 are included in the operating system.
Connect the external hard drive cabinet to the integrated hard drive of your computer; the device
is automatically recognised and the necessary drivers installed.
b) Windows 98SE
At the time of creation of this manual a Windows 98SE driver was on the provided CD. Please
observe here, to first install the driver and only then connect the hard disk enclosure to the
computer.
Insert the provided CD into an appropriate drive on your computer. If the installation program
does not start automatically, start the program „Autorun.exe" in the main directory of the CD.
Start the installation procedure of the driver for the Windows 98SE-Backup software by clicking
„Win98se Driver". Follow all instructions of the software or Windows.
A restart is probably necessary afterwards, subsequently the external hard disk enclosure can
be connected to the PC.
Please note:
Since most of 2.5" hard drives require a current of approx. 1A for start up, and approx.
400-500mA for operation, a low power USB port is not suitable for supplying power to
this enclosure! Furthermore, the control circuit board inside the hard disk enclosure
also requires a certain current (approx. 100mA).
Therefore, just one single high power USB port cannot supply enough current to start
/ boot the 2.5" hard drive. This can lead to the case where the hard disk does not start
or it makes quiet tick-tack noises.
Some USB ports supply more than 500 mA, although this is not standard.
Some Notebooks provide less than 500 mA to their USB-ports. In such cases,
operating the hard drive might be impossible (disc does not rotate, is not initialised or
similar). In this case, an external USB hub with its own power supply unit should be
used.
Alternatively to the USB Y cable a stabilised power supply unit (not provided) can be
used to operate the hard disk enclosure. The inner contact of the round plug has to
have plus/+, with a voltage of +5V=, current at least 1A.
For the USB connection, another conventional USB cable is required (mini USB plug
to USB connector, type A). The Y cable should not be used for operation with an
external power supply unit!
Important: This driver is only necessary for Windows 98SE!
Please observe that this driver probably won't be supplied with future software
releases.
