• Decide on a meeting place that is outside your house.
• Make everyone familiar with the sound of the smoke detector; everyone must know that they have to leave
the house immediately should they hear this sound.
• Identify children's rooms with red stickers in the upper-left corner of the windows. The stickers are
available at the local fire brigade.
• Carry out a fire drill at least once every 6 months. Fire drills help you to test your escape route before an
emergency occurs. It may be that you are not able to help your children. It is important that your children
know what to do and how to act.
What to do when the alarm sounds
• Leave the house immediately according to the escape route. Every second counts, therefore do not waste
any time by getting dressed or taking valuables with you.
• When leaving, do not open any doors without touching the surface of the door first. Do not open the door if
it is hot or if you see smoke coming in from underneath! Use the alternative escape route instead.
• If the surface of the door is cool, press your shoulder against it and open the door only slightly. Be prepared
to slam the door shut if heat and smoke are coming from the room behind.
• Keep close to the floor if the air is filled with smoke. Breathe through a towel that is dampened if possible.
• When outside, go to your agreed meeting point and ensure that everyone is there.
• Ring the fire brigade from your neighbour's house, not from your own!
• Do not go back into the house until the fire brigade allows to you.
False alarm
The smoke detector should be installed in a place that rules out the possibility of a false alarm.
• Smoking cigarettes will not normally trigger an alarm unless the smoke is blown directly onto the smoke
detector.
• Combustion particles which are produced when cooking can activate the alarm if the smoke detector is
located near cooking units.
• If the smoke alarm goes off, first check to see whether there is genuinely a source of fire.
• If you discover a fire, inform your family members and ensure that everyone leaves the building. Phone
the fire brigade.
• If there is no fire, check to see whether the reasons mentioned above may have triggered the alarm.
Operation and testing
a) Operation
The smoke detector functions as soon as the battery is inserted. When products of combustion are detected
in the air, a loud alarm sounds. This stops once the air is free from smoke.
b) Testing
• Test the smoke detector by pressing the test button for at least 4 seconds until the alarm sounds. This
activates a self-testing program. The alarm sounds when the electronics, beeper and battery are working.
• It is strongly recommended to test to the device every week to ensure that it functions properly. If no alarm
sounds, the battery may be empty. Replace the battery and test again.
LED lights
• The LED lights flash rapidly when the alarm sounds.
• In standby mode the LED lights flash once every 30 seconds.
Changing the battery
a) Check the battery
• The 9 V battery normally lasts for at least one year under normal use. However, in rooms with a high
humidity and/or high temperatures, the battery capacity may be prematurely depleted.
• The smoke detector has a low battery indicator and an audible "beep". It sounds in 30 - 40 second intervals
and continues for at least 30 days. Change the battery when you notice this sound.
• Only use 9V brand name batteries (available in most hardware or electrical stores).
b) Recommended battery types
Zinc-carbon type:
Eveready #216; Gold Peak #1604P (UL); Gold Peak #1604S; Gold Peak #1604G; Premisafe #G6F22
Alkaline types:
Eveready Energizer #522; Gold Peak #1604A; Vinnic AM9V; Duracell #MN1604; Conrad Best.No. 650153
c) Important information
• Not suitable for use with lithium batteries!
• Danger of explosion if the battery is handled inappropriately. Replace the battery only with an
identical or equivalent type.
• If the battery was replaced, always check that the alarm is functioning using the test button.
Useful safety precautions
In certain situations the smoke detector may not be effective for protection against fire.
For example:
• When smoking in bed
• When children handle ignition devices
• When handling flammable liquids (e.g. benzine).
Installation and mounting
The smoke detector is designed for easy mounting. A complete installation set is included with every smoke
detector. Follow the steps below:
1. Turn the base plate anticlockwise and remove.
2. Hold the base plate on the desired mounting location and mark 2 drill holes with a pen.
» For wooden panelling or beams, use a 2.5 mm drill to drill approx. 20 mm deep.
» For concrete or brickwork, use a 5.5 mm drill to drill 25 - 30 mm deep.
3. Secure the base plate using suitable screws/dowels.
4. Connect the battery with the connector clip and place the battery flat into the battery compartment.
5. Secure the smoke detector to the base plate by placing it onto the base plate and turning it clockwise
to lock.
6. The product is equipped with a safety feature that stops the smoke detector from being attached to the
base plate if no battery has been inserted.
» If your smoke detector will not fit onto the base plate, ensure that the battery is installed properly.
Maintenance and cleaning
• Apart from occasional cleaning, the device is maintenance-free.
• In rooms with a very high amount of dust, you should clean the smoke detector carefully from the outside
once or twice per month using a vacuum cleaner. In other rooms it is sufficient to clean the detector once
every 5 to 6 months.
• Do not immerse the product in water.
• Water and other fluids must not be used to clean the product.
• Do not use any abrasive or chemical cleaning agents.
Disposal
a) Product
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the household waste.
At the end of its service life, dispose of the product according to the relevant statutory regulations.
Remove any inserted batteries and dispose of them separately from the product.
b) Batteries
You as the end user are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries. Disposing of them
in the household waste is prohibited.
Contaminated batteries are labelled with this symbol to indicate that disposal in the domestic
waste is forbidden. The designations for the heavy metals involved are: Cd = Cadmium, Hg =
Mercury, Pb = Lead (name on batteries, e.g. below the trash icon on the left).
Used batteries can be returned to collection points in your municipality, our stores or wherever
batteries are sold.
You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment.
